I was being facetious...

I know you were (I've read your posts before);), but I still won't reply to those kind of posts...

I'm waiting for my laundry to finish so, in the meantime, I'm reading through this thread to kill some time. ;)

  :) :D

BTW, I've never noticed people using apostrophes for plurals unless the "word" happened to be an acronym, like LCD's. Yup, those I've seen a lot of.

I'm so lost... first, we're talking about punctuation faux pas, then laundry, and now Grace's 19th birthday...

What?

Fear not. A moderator is here to set this thread back on course. But first, let me get back to folding my dried clothes.

A complaint of mine on grammar: real as an adverb instead of really.

'The comedian was really funny', not 'The comedian was real funny'.

The "dumbing down of society" is widespread. It mostly started with text messaging and instant messaging. You have people that are too lazy to spell out the proper word. It's as simple as that. Hey look, while it might not be possessive, it is a contraction and an apostrophe is appropriate. It drives me crazy to see a moronic post with no punctuation or capitalization. If you are too lazy to use proper grammar, I would rather not see you post. I understand that there are non-English speaking members here and that spelling and usage varies somewhat. There's not much you can do about that. On a somewhat similar topic, what annoys me even more than apostrophes is someone using "irregardless." It's not a word. I hear it more than I see it on POTN. Ok, my rant is over.

Having ranted on this subject before, and been ridiculed therefore, I shan't do so again.

Let me just say that when I see egregious linguistic disregard/errors, I look to see if the poster is from a non-English-speaking country. If he is, I give him the benefit of the doubt.

If he is not, then I immediately ignore the post. If he wishes to be so inconsidersate and so rude to me, the reader, that he cannot even attempt to use real English, in some recognizable dialect, then he simply is not worthy of my attention.

And no, I don't care what his question is, nor how important it may be to him.

Rudeness begets disregard.

As cited by Random House Webster's Unabridged Electronic Dictionary, copyright © 1999 by Random House, Inc.

ir·re·gard·less (irÅi gärdÆlis), adv. Nonstandard.
regardless.
[1910–15; IR-2 (prob. after irrespective) + REGARDLESS]
Usage. IRREGARDLESS is considered nonstandard because of the two negative elements ir- and -less. It was probably formed on the analogy of such words as irrespective, irrelevant, and irreparable. Those who use it, including on occasion educated speakers, may do so from a desire to add emphasis. IRREGARDLESS first appeared in the early 20th century and was perhaps popularized by its use in a comic radio program of the 1930s.

Note that irregardless is a word, but is nonstandard. I've know several highly educated people who use it; I am not among them. I blame not the people, but the American system of education, which believes in "pass at all costs, lest a child's psyche be damaged."
