I have a dell XPS m1710 and I had always wondered if it did dual 1920x1200. Well I wasn't let down. I scored a dell 2407 24 inch display on craigslist and decided to set up a "station". Calibrated everything again and am digging it. Having the card readers built in are awesome.

Monitor sits in front with the mouse pad directly in front of it. The laptop sits to the side. I'm comfortable with the keyboard action and use my 12x16 cutting mat as the mouse pad since I have a glass table top and an optical mouse.

Why the thread? 2 things, the dell XPS does dual 1920. yay. Secondly, I am getting my brain around using the two monitors and switching between them etc.

Gujustud was over for some portraits and he was impressed with the resolution. He recommended Virtualmon since his father uses it for cad/cam work. Are there any setups, techniques or current software I should mess about with before I get locked into a way of doing things that I won't want to unlearn?

Sure it does. Watch telly and post process. Obviously your video can handle both.

No booze, no drugs, no smokes. The money piles up fast without vices. Monitors are cheap if you can pounce fast on the used stuff.

I've been running dual monitors for about a year and a half. I have two 20" Samsungs. The thing is if you've never used dual monitors, do yourself a favor and try it sometime. I guarantee once you try it you will never go back to a single monitor, especially if you spend any amount of time on your computer.

The program I have found most useful is UltraMon, it has worked flawlessly for me.

Congrats, jason! Once you go dual monitor, you'll never go back to singles. Hopefully, you won't be plagued by your monitors not matching each other in color even after calibration like I experienced before I switched the 2nd monitor to one identical to the first. After a while, the color mismatch drove me nuts and I couldn't take it any more.

Welcome to the 21st Century Jason

I've useing a dual monitor set up for several years, a thread on the subject by CDS inspired me to give it a go not long after I joined the forum.

I don't use any special software, I just extend the desk top.
That leaves the taskbar on the main monitor that I do most of my work on, and the second monitor left for things that don't fit.

For example i keep all my PS tool bars on the second monitor, I use it for viewing slide shows etc.
Very handy, I will never go back.

I have a cintiq 21ux and an apple cinema 30in. I have never used any special software for dual monitors. I use the nvidia software that came with my graphics card and set them up in dual view. One is calibrated for either NTSC or film and the other is calibrated for print. I get the added bonus of watching scrubs while I do PS work :)
