It's not for sure. You can damage your camera. It has to be under whatever voltage the hot-shoe uses (I dunno what that is, I know on my 20D the PC sync is 250v, not sure on the hot-shoe). If it's under it won't ever damage a thing. And that said, it can still work fine even if it's over. It will slowly damage the electronics in the circuit though.

Troubleshooting 101 (see also: LightRules,perryge):
1) RTFM.
2) Repeat Step 1.

Before I didn't know any better, I used my old Vivitar 2600-D on my 300D and it still works. Now, I've been using my 5D for 6 months now and its still working. That said, I plan on getting a newer Vivitar 285HV soon...

I was asked to mod the trigger voltage on an old vivitar 273 flashgun by my father in law. Trigger voltage was 327v. After mod it is now 5.24v. As this worked perfectly I will now mod my own 283 & 285. There is a little more room inside 283 & 285.

The diagram

The components. 1 - 3020P Optotriac, 1 - Tic106D Triac, 1 - 330 ohm resistor, 1 - 5.6k ohm resistor. Also used heat shrink sleeve & 24 swg wire

The Victim, a rather tired looking Vivitar 273

The components in circuit

Took about 2 hours to complete, components just about squeeze in. Also took the time to clean sensor window & inner battery terminals. Result = 1 usable flashgun & 1 happy father in law!!

Hi, B1G, I saw your photo and your circuit modification for the vivitar 283. It would be very nice if you can help me to modify the circuit, because I don’t understand where must I cut the trigger circuit to insert the modification. Is it possible to see same photo about?

Thank You very much in advance.

I did the same mod about a year ago with great results. In fact, I added an option for an external 6V supply (via a connector) which comes out the front of my 283.

I have done a number of these with both 4 AA battery and 2 AA battery flashes. But I leave out R2. For the SCR I use a C106 since it is smaller. I solder the opto-triac and the SCR together without interconnecting wires (using the component leads only). It makes for a smaller package. Sometimes I even cut the top half of the SCR off. Handy in some flashes that don't have much room.

Hi b1gdaddy,

during my search for the modification of a Vivitar 273 for safe sync voltage, I stumbled over this post... This mod looks nice and doable...

But one other thing I am interested in is: There are modifications (like this: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=55625 (external link)) for the Vivitar 283, to be able to regulate the flash output. Is there a way to do this with a Vivitar 273 as well?

Greets,
Mongole

I don't know if it will work on the 273, so you'll have to research it, maybe in the blog. I can tell you that it works great in the 283. It's the Vivitar VP-1 Varipower Module (external link)

And for those who don't want to modify the flash trigger voltage, just buy one of these: Wein safe Sync (external link)
