Under "Quality" setting I don't see a raw option.

that's because the box modes don't support anything, they are full auto...

switch it to Av, set value to the lowest number possible, and shoot... anything on the other side of Tv is practically useless

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

You can't shoot RAW in the "Basic" modes such as portrait, landscape, sports, and such. You should go manual or aperature priority. I shoot only manual, RAW, neutral.

You must have a small aperture lens or very low light or both. What is it you are testing on? Conditions?

I have plenty of light and I tried the highest and lowest apertures and the shutter never opens back up.

LOL - what, never? So your camera is now broken? ;)

Or do you mean just a VERY LONG exposure?

What shutter speed is the camera telling you?

Alex - What lens are you using? Make sure the batteries are fully charged. Place the camera in Av mode. Set the aperature to f5.6 and see if you can get a shot. Did you remember to put a CF card in?

Do you have mirror lock-up on perchance? It's in your custom functions, could've turned it on by accident?

I'm using the 28-135mm lens that came with the camera. I set the aperture to 5.6 and the shutter speed was 25, it took about 20 seconds for the shutter to open up again and then after it closed I couldn't get the picture to show on the camera screen like it normally would.

As far as "mirror lock-up" I could not see what I had it set on, a message read "cannot register more items, delete item and register" I'm not sure how to delete and if I do delete an item will I be able to get it to show up again?

What the. . . .?

Mirror lockup?
Very slow shutter speed?

I'm not sure what you mean by this?

Alex:

You have the camera set on the GREEN BOX, switch it to P; Tv; A; etc and then you can shoot RAW. On GREEN BOX (Full automatic) RAW is not an option.

I think some of the guys here went a bit wide in diagnosing your problem. The first reply from basroil pretty much hit it but it could have been clearer.

I took Basroil's suggestion and put it on AV but the shutter took about twenty seconds to close (aperture 5.6 and shutter speed 25) and then there was no photo showing on the screen as is usually the case and it was nowhere to be found. So I'm trying to figure out why it's taking twenty seconds to close the shutter and why the photo never registered on the camera.

Look in your menu and see if somebody enabled mirror lockup. If Mirror lockup is on you press the shutter once to raise the mirror and a second time to actually take the picture. If you don't press the shutter that second time, the mirror will return after about 20 sec.

It must be on because after pressing the shutter a second time it did take the picture and I can see it on the display. The problem is that when I look at my menu under "mirror lockup" and click it a message comes on "cannot register more items, delete an item and then register" so I can't see if it's on or not and if it is on I can't change it to off. If I delete an item can I get it back or is it then gone from the camera?
