It must be on because after pressing the shutter a second time it did take the picture and I can see it on the display. The problem is that when I look at my menu under "mirror lockup" and click it a message comes on "cannot register more items, delete an item and then register" so I can't see if it's on or not and if it is on I can't change it to off. If I delete an item can I get it back or is it then gone from the camera?

You may have to do a full reset to the factory configuration. This is done by removing both the main battery (or removing the "grip" if you are using one) and then also removing the disc-shaped memory retention battery. After waiting a few minutes, reinstall them and the camera should be returned to the factory-new configuration.

Are you, by any chance, using one of the "Custom" (C1, C2, C3) modes? Or at the "Register My Menu settings" screen (p. 164).

Mirror lockup was indeed on, I was able to access it from "my menu" settings only after deleting another setting from my menu settings. Is there another place that I could have accessed it so that I wouldn't have had to delete a setting?

Sounds like Jon hit the nail on the head, you are in the mode to register up to 6 items to your private menu. You need to be out of that mode, then go to the custom functions menu to set values there. I strongly urge you to read through the manual once, your other question on how to pop up the flash manually would have been addressed near the beginning. If you don't have the manual, it is available as a PDF on the Canon site. It may sound harsh, but if you are using a DSLR, you may never realize its full potential without knowing what all is at your fingertips or how to access those features.

I also do what you are doing, I first get a new techie toy, I will play with it fully, trying to figure it all out, THEN I go to the manual and read it. I find that I understand more completely those things I already figured out on my own, and quickly understand the other items I didn't know about. This works for me, anyways. Just a thought!

Alex,

I don't have a 40D, but with my cameras Mirror Lockup is C.Fn-12. People who use it a lot (like me) would put it in My Menu, but if you have too many things in My Menu I guess the camera complains. My cameras don't have a My Menu, though, so I can't check it out personally.

Hi Alex,

Not trying to sound harsh here, but "I strongly urge you to read through the manual" too.

You are lost in the functions of the camera and have made a bunch of setting changes already, apparently without knowing what any of them do.

There's always an initial learning curve with a complicated new piece of equipment. I'm guessing you haven't owned any of the earlier cameras like 10D, 20D or 30D, since having used those you would have had more of a starting point. So the manual should be your best friend for the next few months, take it with you while shooting. Consult it often, explore different options and learn how to make the camera work well for you.

It may not be available yet because the 40D is such a recent introduction, but once a "Magic Lantern Guide for Canon 40D" comes available, get it. This series of books pick up where the camera manual leaves off, and do a great job illustrating and explaining things so that you can get the most enjoyment and best use out of your new camera.

I agree, very cool book. I thought I knew everything about my 30D, and came across one of these books, there are some great hints, tips, pictures as well, not the dry drab goo found in the canon manuals.

Yeah, I've got the Magic Lantern for the 400D and found it very helpful.

Maybe if Canon got Ken Rockwell to write their manuals they'd be more entertaining.

Oh, so we expect accuracy, objectivity and entertainment?

Hmmm ... Steven King?

Now that would be a strange owners manual... I could just imagine the download rate of the online PDFs if the manual was written by Steven King. I would be afraid to use my camera...
