Hi Guy's
Can you suggest what flash would be suitable for a beginner for around £100.00 ( $200.00 ) ...simple to use, for family indoor stuff, portraits etc. Particularly to use with a 50mm 1.8F
Thanks

HI tequila,

Assuming you are shooting with a Canon EOS camera with ETTL functionality then I would suggest getting something like the Canon 430EX Speedlite. They go for a little over your budget brand new and are readily available in the used market for some very good prices. It's a good flash and for what you're describing it will have more than enough power.

Not in rip off britain!!!. £169.00 is about the average price here for 430ex. You may get the Sigma for your budget.

Eek! Sorry. If you don't mind giving up ETTL and using the flash in Manual mode then I think there is a Vivitar and a Sunpak that people seem to use and like. I'm not sure of the model numbers.

That would be Vivitar 285HV (make sure you get the one named HV) and SunPak 383.

The original poster probably want a flash with e-ttl functionality though. So I would suggest the Sigma EF530 ST DG that can be had for just a few quid over budget. Beats the hell out of Canons equivalent in the same price range, the measly Speedlite 220 EX.
