I know this may seem a little strange fitting such a cheapo lens on a 5D, but in general I have noticed that whatever lens I fit on the 5D it performs better than when it was on say my 30D.

I have seen comments made on here that the 50mm f/1.4 performs much better on the 5D, I was wondering how this can apply to the dreaded 1.8 with its notoriously poor AF accuracy (or so I have heard).

Now I know the general consensus is to get the 50mm f/1.4 & skip the f/1.8 altogether, but I just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience of this lens on the 5D? mainly things like focus accuracy, whats that like?

For the money I could just say sod it & buy one to see for myself, but I dont want to go down the road of putting junk glass in front of my 5D, but then again if the 50mm f/1.8 were to AF with any degree of accuracy better than what it does on say a 30D it might be fun to try one out as I dont use this focal length that much so a 1.4 would be overkill for me.

A friend of mine uses a 50 1.8 on her 5d. She seems to like it. The AF still seems to have trouble (from what I hear when standing next to her), but she doesn't seem to care.

The Focal length is great.

*This is in no way an endorsement of that piece of crap lens.*

Ok, let me endorse that lens. I have had the same 50mm 1.8 lens for darn near a decade. It has performed for me without fail, all across the world. From the Great Wall of China, to the streets of Hong Kong, the Zen Monasteries of Japan, the Rainforest of Maylasia, to the Wilds of Yellowstone Park, it keeps on taking fine pictures. Sharp as heck, virtually destroying any zoom lens in IQ.

Take care of your lenses, and they will last.

Give me a 5D and I'll tell you. I was responding to that outrageous comment against the 50mm 1.8.

plastic mount + no USM = junk, imo :D!

it's a good beginner lens tho like the kit lens.

Would that be the 50mm 1.8 MK I by any chance?

I use that piece of crap lens on the 5D. Deliveries great IQ for a piece of crap. (Apart from the great IQ, it truly is a piece of crap lens ... it is well worth every 69 dollars that I paid.)

it's a rare man that shells out the big bucks for a 5d and then "saves money" by buying a $70 lens with a plastic mount :D!

i'm going to put 70 bucks into my gas tank today before making the rounds :D!

I have the 50 1.8 and the 5D. It's an incredible combination, don't worry.

I get my shots published every month with that combo.

The only thing I have against the 50mm 1.8 is the bokeh when it is stopped down. The 5 bladed aperture comes into play there and I don't like that.

Other than that, it is an awesome lens and great fun to use.

That's moi. I also have a 24-70 covering that range ... but the $69 dollar lens works very well ... and as a former professional photog .... mmmh... I believe I have pretty high standards.

It is all about the final image ... not how you get there.

Huh, I sold mine along with the 10D and haven't even tried it out on my 5D. It would be great for stealth street photos, but otherwise, I was unimpressed and in some instances annoyed by it's bokeh. I guess I'm kinda sorry I sold it, it's one of the smallest lenses made by Canon and as such (also considering that it's unreasonably sharp for it's price) could be very useful. Some people are afraid of my 85L. :(

5D and holy trinity of primes. Now the 90mm TS-E TS-E fly bit me. I hate these forums.
