ouch ... okay I'm not politically correct.

But you know what I mean. As I stated earlier, I believe that what is attached to the front of the camera doesn't matter ... what does matter is that the image coming out of the camera attains your personal idea/criteria of an exceptional photograph.

what matters to me is if i am having fun...and i am. i know what you meant :D.

I'm jumping in and siding with those who question the OP's priorities of buying a$2200 camera and a $70 lens. My 1DMK2 and lenses seems to mirror this, except I got my 1D at a bargain cheaper price even by today's used standards.

Even though the nifty fifty gives great pictures, I would feel strange if any photo enthusiast or professional DIDN'T question the buying choice of the combination of a 5D and a 50 1.8. Yeah, they produce great images, but for the same price you could have gotten a 30D and 50 1.2 and change.

Nothing is wrong with spending $16,000 on a Mac Pro system (external link) and hooking it up to a free 15 inch CRT monitor. But almost anyone knowing something about computers wouldn't be out of place to think that extremely strange and deserving of shaking heads, rolling eyes, and whispers behind backs.

OP just asked about the quality of the lense as an addition to his other lenses. He has nice lenses to go with the 5D. I do, too. I also have a 50 1.8 and use it every once in a while and think it is fine for some things. Pictures can be quite nice if I do my work well enough; if I don't, I can't blame that lense.:o Would it be the lense I would use if my living depended upon one lense - nope, no way!

I confess, I use it whenever I'm trying to slow down kids inside at night. I'd really like to get an "f/1.4" but can't talk myself into it since I have the plastic wonder. If it was a shoddily built as everyone says it would have broken by now and I could justify a better-built, faster lens. God knows I put it in harm's was enough.

theses two lenses have been compared ad nausem. i've never seen anyone say they prefer the 50 1.8...except for a couple guys on this thread who haven't used the 1.4.

the optics of the 1.8 are great...especially for the price, but the focussing sucks (even mr. el twitcho says so) and so does the build.

you should be asking folks who've owned both lenses which they prefer.

BTW, i also think the 50 1.2 is a defective lens and would not own one :D!

Would that be me...:) I love the 50f1.8, BUT the 50f.14 kills the L-Getto in AF and built. At IQ the L-Getto kicks the undercover-L f1.4 from 2.0 on. I have both and I don't use the f1.8 since I am a wide-open whore...yeah...there I said. it! I love f1.4 period...:) I actually LEARNED how to focus with the f1.8 at f1.8 It takes a LOT of practice

There is only one catch. I can't use f1.4 in daylite...my poor 30D can only handle 1/8000 :) Did I mention I like shooting WIDE open...:)

Yes but as I said 90% of all images taken on my 5D are with the 24-105L, the other 10% are with the 70-300IS, this 50mm would really be VERY occasional use, paid shots are always going to be done on my best lens, the L! the 50mm would be for family shots, just junk stuff really.

At no point was I EVER going to pair the 5D with an inferior lens for full time use, I was only wondering what the 50mm f/1.8 was like on the 5D, with regards about your comments that it would be better to own a 30D with the 50mm f/1.2 in some ways I agree, but also I have found whatever glass I put in front of the 5D it performs better than on the 30D, thats why I asked if this was true about the 1.8 too.

Exactly!

Somebody who actually read & understood my OP :D the 1.8 is never going to be my main lens, id never do that to the 5D :p
