So I go to the Berkeley Aquatic Park after work with the 20D, 500 f4.5L and
1.4x tc to take a few pictures. It's getting dark, so I remove the tc and shot
just the 500L to pick up some shutter speed. I chanced on a Great Blue Heron
standing in the grass like a statue. I watched it for about 5 minutes and it
didn't move. I almost thought someone had placed a stuffed bird out there for
the joggers to see. Finally it moved, slowly sneaking up to the base of a small
tree and struck. I was shooting off a monopod with the camera set at
ISO800, f5-4.5, -.33 av in AP mode. The shutter speed was around 1/320 sec.

Here's the series I captured of this encounter.

Terrific series George....I've only seen them eat frogs or fish. This was a real surprise.

Thanks Scott. I've seen them go after voles and field mice, but this was the largest
mammal I've seem them go after.

Wow great shooting, as like Scott I've only ever seen them eat fish. I had just assumed that marine life was their diet and to see this was a real treat.

Thanks Ray and Christian. I was excited to be able to get these shots. It was also
interesting to see him finish the meal...

I agree this is an excellent study. I also was unaware that mice/voles were on the diet.
