Often on this site I have pictures that don't show up, and don't have a red "X" in a box either---the post will just contain words of the original poster and their signature. Other people will then comment on the image that is nowhere to be found on my screen.

I can run both Internet Exporer and Mozilla Firefox, and it is the same with both. Is there a setting change I need to make?

Thanks for any and all help.

I think you may need to log in using both the www POTN address and the IP POTN address. Sorry, I don't know the IP address off the top of my head...but I am sure someone here will have it and can post it. That helped me when I had red x's in some posts....maybe it'll work for you.

The other possibility is that the OP removed the picture by the time you got to the thread which has happened many times.

Does this happen at home or at work?

Using the IP address won't make a difference; in fact it has the potential to break things. It was only necessary right after Pekka changed servers and the DNS entry hadn't replicated fully across the Internet.

If you highlight the post in Firefox, you can choose to "View Selection Source" and see where the image is being hosted. Businesses commonly block various photo-sharing sites and replace their graphics with a 1-pixel jpeg; you wouldn't notice this on the screen.

I didn't know that Jon. Before the server change, that's what I had to do to get some pictures to show up. As a matter of fact, there are some members here still using the IP address for the daily access to POTN....when I click on a link posted in a thread, it links to POTN though the IP address. I have to log on after clicking the link when I clear cookies .

Attachments won't show up unless you're logged in. Anything other than attachments is hosted elsewhere, and whether it's visible on POTN threads has very little to do with POTN's configuration.

One other possible cause is if you're only allowing images from the originating server (only images from POTN, that would be); you're disallowing "third-party" images, that are hosted elsewhere.

I made a number of suggestions recently in this thread that might also be helpful: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=413478

If you can post an example of a thread you're having problems with, that would be a great starting point for further troubleshooting.

Thanks all for your help. Your suggestions has made me aware that the difficulties mainly lie when veiwing posts from flickr accounts.

Here are a couple posts where the photos don't show up at all, no red x's either----They seem to be most prevelent with flickr images.
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=417570

Here is a link where the first post's picture doesn't show up, but then in post #5 the OP has reposted an edit----the edited image does show up!
https://photography-on-the.net …t=418252&highlight=flickr

Hopefully somebody can compare and see where a problem might lie.

Thanks again!

The second example is a bit of a trick. The first image is hosted by flickr, while the edited shot that's posted in the 5th reply is done as an attachment and is actually stored on the POTN server -- so that explains why one works and the other doesn't.

Can you view the image if you click on the image link directly?

How about just going directly to flickr? www.flickr.com (external link)

Since you said this was at home, any chance you might have some security software installed that blocks your access to flickr?

What David put is helpful, but another little trick I used to do is to right click the red x and select properties...if the hosting server is there, I simply copied and pasted into the address bar to view the image.

The red X only appears in IE, though. If I'm using IE and have the problem, that's one of the first things I try and it's a good thing for people trying to troubleshoot this themselves to remember.

Using Firefox, I get no indication that there's even an image there, and I think that's the same thing the OP's seeing.

ibdb,
The links did work when going to Flickr directlly.
Also, I almost always use Internet Explorer, and when this happens it is as though there is no type of an image in the post.

Well. . . that's different. I could reliably count on the red X in IE to show me when things weren't appearing in Firefox. ???

After following the links directly, do the images appear in the threads again? I don't use flickr, so I'm wondering if there's some sort of permission thing that the users could be setting that's non-standard in some way. If the problem is always with flickr, and with all images hosted on flickr, that could lead you one way. If it's always with flickr, but not all images hosted on flickr, that would point to some sort of configuration/permissions thing when the images are uploaded and shared.

Hmmmm. . . Anybody else have any ideas?
