hello, has anyone had any problesm with the onboard flash failing on their rebel xti?? my camera will be a year old in febuary, and ive only used an external flash a couple times, one of the externals i used was about 8 months ago was a jessop, i checked to see what the fireing voltage was before i used it and it was only 6 volts so i cant see that hurting anything, and then i used a borrowed 430 ex a little while ago, just wonderingi f its a common problem or not??

Hi, is it failing to fire or is it failing to pop up when required?

Don't knock it unless you have tried it!

Mine started to do the same, when the button was pressed to release the flash a series of clicks occured and error 5 appeared in the display window. It seems that if the flash is not used very often the release mechanism sticks. What I do is grab hold of the flash unit with one hand, press the release lever with the other, then the flash opens.

I cleaned the inside of the flash compartment with a 2" paintbrush, getting all the dust out especially around the pop up levers, now 8 out of 10 times it pops up when required.

mine does not even click, i have had it do that before when my hat was over the flash and restricting it from coming up, but this is different, ive spoken to the company that i purchased it from and they said to bring it in and they would have a look then send it away for warrenty if required, as its a month under a year old. kind of sucks though to happen now when i want it at christmas time inside where its needed, ill have to make do and it will really be bad while im without the camera if they ahve to send it to canon

This is a common failing with Canon's pop-up flashes and has been covered in previous threads ad-infinitum... Do a search for "pop-up flash" and you should find the information you need. Here are three threads that address the problem:
