Got an ABR800 in the mail the other day. Had a chance to play with it a bit, these are just some really raw rough shots (basic ringlight in front, couple strobes in back to blow the white out) but I was actually really excited about the possibilities I see opening up as far as black and white conversions go. Because the ringflash produces such even lighting, there's ALOT of room for dodging and burning. I actually used quite a few layers on the black and white shot to get that look, and it's not "finished" per se, but I really like where it's going.

Comments on either photo and anything at all are appreciated. When I use this for a serious shoot I'm pretty excited for how I imagine the results are going to turn out

You sure can tell its a ring light, I love what it does to the eyes, great work. Good exposure, and convertion. Excellent use of the rule of 1/3's as well. Keep up the great wrok with your new light, I like it..

I like the shot all of it except the lighting in the eyes. I do see others like that effect.

Nice!! I'm seriously considering the ABR800. Did you use any modifiers on it? I'm also thinking about doing the pack/head Ringmaster, but I'm just not sure.

Thanks guys,

Fork, I did use the moon unit. otherwise you have to get unreasonably close to get the big soft even lighting I did here

I'll say this much. Attention to detail is EVERYTHING. There isn't really a single neat trick that goes into my shots, instead what you see is alot of work put into individual components, particularly this means working with alot of layers. A portrait I do will typically have between 8 and 15 layers I'm working with, and that's done to selectively work on parts of the image. For instance, I used an entirely different contrast curve on the sweatshirt, the skin, the eyes, the beard, the hair and the eyebrows in the black and white image. That's done because the contrast that looks "perfect" for the skin for instance may cause the beard to get burned out in shadow. It becomes important to work on them seperately so that all the components come together nicely. It's alot like how portraitists would take the time to dodge and burn seperate parts of the image to get a good final product, only this way you can work with brightness as well as contrast.

If you don't already know, learn layer masks. I almost never do a shot without using them.

Thanks Flo. I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the catchlights, although it's the only way to get that particular lighting effect, which I do know that I love.

It's a useful thing to add to the arsenal anyway ;)
