I am considering giving away (selling) my relitively new 40D for a 5D.

Yes, I have caught the FF bug.

BUT my question is, Image Quality, and Full Frame aside, how different are the two cameras operationally. Is there anyone out there who uses both, and finds the 5D a step back fromt he 40D in terms of ease of use and features?

What is also holding me back from doing it is having to give up the 17-55mm 2.8 IS. I love that lens so much.

My father-in-law has a 5D I shoot with quite a bit. It's a great camera but I love my 40D. IQ wise, you won't go wrong with either one, but I prefer the 40D. If you are looking for a FF camera then your question is answered already. Good luck...:D

I have both and the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. The 5D is a better overall camera for Image Quality, but the 40D has nice features that aren't available on the 5D. It really depends on what you want.

Indeed, and depends on how much I weight IQ in terms of my preferences.

Just curious to see if anyone has picked up the 5D after the 40D and found it a step down in usability and function.

I have both as well and the 17-55IS also. They are really different cameras. As Mark says, IQ on the 5d is better but the 40 is much more feature rich. As to easy of use, for the features they have in common, it pretty much works exactly the same way. The size and weight of the camera are also nearly identical. If FF is what your looking for, now is a great time to make the jump. 5D prices have been dropping as of late though they may drop a lot more once the 5D comes out.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Wait for the 5D successor and then jump. A 5D with DIGIC III technology will kick butt.

I've had the 5D for about 2 years, and the 40D for about 3-4 months, I use the 40D a lot more....maybe because it is newer but I also like the controls better.

See i've kinda thought it would be similar for me, but I guess i'll find out when I get my hands on one (seeing a friend who has one this week).

When released, the 5D successor will be the latest and greatest software/firmware. Even beyond the 1D cameras....

I just sold my 5d and bought a 40d simply because the 3fps was to slow for my shooting BIF / jets and the 1.6 crop is better for me.

But the 5d is a better camera imo it feels more solid and the IQ is better too, so if you can live without the above get the 5d .

Well until its in my hands I wouldnt really be able to say. But on paper I know I'd miss the

Larger screen,
Easier Menu, including the customisable menu
sRaw
three C settings
Being able to have IS with my f 2.8 walkaround lens
Built in flash (for those moments where i'm not carrying much)
Sensor cleaner (assuming it works as I havnt had the 40D long enough to have to clean it anyway)

What I'd love about the 5D is the

FF sensor
Greater detail
IQ

Especially for portraits and studio (strobe) work.

I seriously recommend you hire or borrow a 5D for a while and make your own comparisons.

The 5D IQ is a little better, but it aint that much better. The 40D turns out some stunning images.
On the other hand, the 40D has a much more useful spec. My money on the 40D every time.
Then again, I'm someone that just doesn't understand this fascination with FF. Sure it has a couple of benefits, but has at least as many downsides in my opinion.
