I mean, the sealing in my Swiss Army watch needs to be replaced every two years. After 5,6 years, would the rubber in the 1D still work?

Vancouver rains too much, but it's beautiful in the rain

No the seals were programmed to self-destruct in 2006. Poof! A la Mission Impossible.

What's the point of this stupid response. OP question actually makes a lot of sense. Natural wear of rubber seal will defenetly make it less efficient after so many years. For that you would probably have to call canon but they most likely will tell you to send it in for seals replacement so they can charge You for that.

It's not a stupid response it is sarcasm. There is nothing wrong with a light hearted response.

A more serious response from me is as follows:

If the rubber seals around the top buttons isn't brittle and they still have flex, it's safe to say the rest of the seals are fine too. My 1D II is from 2004-ish and I had it out in a steady rainfall (somewhere between sprinkling steadily and a downpour) along with the 70-200IS and 580EX II. I didn't have any protection on it otherwise, and it was fine. You shouldn't be as dumb as I am though, and put some sort of plastic protection over your entire rig regardless of whether it's sealed or not, since it's "weather resistant" not "water sealed."

There. Is that better, Lukasz? ;)

I see cdifoto is pretty talented ;) read his signature, LOL

I guess it won't be cheap to replace all the sealings, would it? may be I should just give it a try if I ever actually bought one. I did took my 40D out to the snow once, and it was all fine.

If only I was in continuouse shooting, you would see this kid flying in the snow half a sec later...

For what it's worth, my 1D that I had earlier this year seemed fine as well. I never took it out in inclement weather though...only because I didn't have a reason.

That's good to hear! I just bought a mint 1D with only 49K clicks for a very, very reasonable price...better than what's selling on eBay, and no shipping/tax costs. Gotta have it!

The rubber seals seems to be in good shape. No signs of aging whatsoever :)

Can't wait for the next snowstorm :p

^ that's truely an impressive picture. i love how the light was cast on the tree. how did you correct the white balance? Gray card and custom WB? it's very accurate.

Thanks. You should see the original. the lighting is horrible because of the lowell observatory so all the lights in town are like an orange yellow cast on everything. it helps keep the visibility of the sky so the telescope can find our former 9th planet :-P
but anyways, I think I had to change the white balance (in raw, 2000k) and then eventually I just started to desaturate it and eventually it came out to this. I just made sure to make the snow as white as possible. so basically I eyeballed this on my laptop. kinda nice that it came out.

The rubber should be fine. Also keep in mind that a non-weather sealed lens with a weater sealed camera equals not weather sealed.

I see. That's actually nice. I want to shoot the Milk Way, but it's impossible to do in town...

Thanks. I will only use the 70-200 f4 IS with the 1D in snow ;)
You have the lens, so you know it's sealed although it's not on Canon's list yet.
