Put this in the B & W forum and got zilch on it. Would like some C & C.
Also any advice on how to make the full guitar shot pop more in print. I like the print but it looks much better on my monitor.

Hi silvrr. I really like the top one... interesting how the light accentuates the curvature of the soundboard. I wonder if the lighting wasn't enough without the shallow depth of field though: only natural for a guitarist to want to run an eye down the fretboard, see the curvature, and gauge the action, although there's not so much on display from that angle. Nice tones, nice framing, great lighting, works 100% for me. Don't know why, but the second one doesn't do anything for me. I guess it just looks prickly. Maybe it's because you don't tend to play that part of the guitar, it just doesn't seem to have the same connotations. The Washburn brandname stands out so much too, and there's not enough detail in the reflections - with the all of similar (small) size for them to become interesting in their own right. Can't suggest anything re printing, must plead ignorance. Cheers, Tony

I like the way the top photo looks like its got a spotlight on it. what does it look like in color, i wonder? as for the second, I would try to make the head blend in even more with the black background, so only a few glints of the contour would show, and make the machine heads look like they're floating. I just posted a quick edit of what I'm talking about. overall great shots.

I tired making color versions after I finished the B & W versions (I wanted the b & w) and I couldnt make them look as good as the b&W. The color is a sunburst orange so I need to work on the color it looks really good against the black.

thanks for your help.

I just commented on this in the still life section. I like both, I like how the first on fades out at the ends, nice work. Lets see some more.

The more I look at it the more I think it may just need to be a bigger print. Im used to looking at it on a 22" monitor and I printed it out as a 5 X 7.

Thanks for all your help though.

I think the fade is from the sunburst and lighting. I have to admit I didnt intend it but like the outcome.

Thats all I have for now :( I was going to work on getting some color ones when I get a chance.

Perhaps not having the foreground in focus is keeping the image from popping more. The leading edge of the guitar and the front knob are out of focus. Perhaps reshooting this focused slightly closer and with a smaller aperture would allow all of the foreground to "pop" while still allowing the background elements to fade and blur. Nice picture as is.

Justjoem - I had thought it was possibly not being able to see the detail in the 5x7 that was making me not like the print. Ill have to try it with a smaller aperature and all the foreground features in focus to see how it changes it. Thanks!
