an lcd screen is glass therefore, unless its cracked somewhere, therefore wouldnt work at all

I don't mean to be harsh here, but I don't think you understand how your camera is put together. Sometimes it's better to listen and learn. :)

No, it's not.
It is hard plastic that you can replace yourself.

As has been indicated several time, the LCD sits beneath a plastic cover. That's the part you can touch on the back of your camera. Every Canon DSLR is built like this, even yours.

I'm pretty sure he means the plastic LCD cover since he tried to wipe it off. :)

Not on the 400D I'm afraid. It's a plastic cover which can be removed with a sucker apparently (and before anybody asks, that's not a type of snake)

Listen to Mark!
The glass part you cannot touch, it’s underneath the plastic cover that most people refer to as ‘glass’.

It's not, and you're mistaken. Sorry, but sometimes people are just wrong. We can continue this "discussion" all day long but that's not going to change the plastic cover on the back of your 400D to glass (and I suspect the cover on your S50 is plastic too). The LCD glass is underneath a thick plastic insert.

Yes, it can be replaced easily.
If you order the spare one from Canon (cca $20), you get fresh gaskets and the instruction sheet to tell you how to do it.
