I think you saw the 70-200mm 4.0 or 4.0 IS. My friend has the 70-200mm 2.8 IS and I used it a couple of times. When I got my 70-200mm 4.0 IS, it looked a lot smaller then I expected. I was expecting something bigger, because I saw the picture comparison on the-digital-picture. I had a sigma 70-200mm 2.8 and when my sister saw my Canon 70-200mm 4.0 IS, they were like man that is a lot smaller then your old lens.

Current: Canon 40D w/BG-E2N, Canon 30D, Canon 10-22mm, Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS w/EW-83J, Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS, Canon 580EX II, Crumpler 6 Million Bag, and B+W MRC on all my glass.

are you sure it was a canon camera? one of the pretenders has smaller white lenses.

I'm certain. It was attached to a 1D Mark II or Mark IIn based on sound of it firing off.

At this point I'm fairly convinced it must have been a 70-200 f/4 IS. At least that is what it looked like. Perhaps on the 1D body it ... just looks smaller than it actually is??

BTW that silver/champagne lens is ugly...

FWIW, in person the 70-200 f/4 looks like something you'd find in a sex shop.

There goes a low blow to my ego :)

THe 70-200 F4 looks very small, because it is not very wide, although height wise it is similar to the f2.8.

http://g-ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/518NAK4PRQL.jpg (external link) - this one is not white but silver. It's old ef 28-90 sold as a kit lens with the EOS 300 (film camera). The smalles white lens in Canon line-up is the 70-200 4.0. Minolta made some white lenses in the past too.

The EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6L USM is white and is quite a bit smaller smaller than the 70-200 f/4. The EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM is also shorter than the 70-200 when at the 28mm position. He might have seen someone with one of those. The 35-350 is remarkably compact really when at 35mm.
