I just bought a used 30D and I'm wondering if there is any reason for or against registering it with Canon?

I think registration is for new cameras, so double entry may bother you a bit if Canon investigates.

If the previous owner never registered the camera - the registration system will most likely accept the serial number. I recently purchased a lightly used 20D locally and the original owner had never registered it with Canon and so I did. Worked fine, no big deal.

Is there some advantage to registering a used camera? No warranty would be involved on a 20D...

EDIT: oops. See message #7...

Placebo effect - I felt better knowing that Canon knew I had the 20D! :D

Oops. I see it's a 30D. Is it less than a year old, Nic?

you get lots of great junk email, and Canon gets a few bucks by selling
your information to third parties ;)

Junk email or even junk mail?? And from third parties?? HUH??

I've registered all my cameras when I got them and never recieve junk emails. In fact after I registered my first 10D Canon sent me a 96mb CF card. After I registered my 5D I got a package with a coupon for $100 off for out of warrenty service and special labels for shipping. In fact I never did check the entire package out ... hmmm?

Don't know if it's true or not but I heard years ago (when I bought my Minolta X700 in the mid 80's) that registering the serial number may be of some help if your gear is ever stolen should someone down the line decide to have it serviced.

As for registering a used camera ... no idea!

Then if you don't have the original receipt, registering it should maintain the warranty for you.

I'd do it...

According to Canon the warranties are not transferable.

And that’s why Canon rarely asks for warranty card – copy of the original receipt is enough..

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

According to Canon the warranties are not transferable.

Several POTN members have reported that Canon service will honor the warranty for the second user if s/he has the original receipt. So I guess they're not particularly concerned.

And what's this non-transferable business, anyway??? It must satisfy consumer protection laws or Canon wouldn't have gotten away with it - but warranties are transferable on most other big-ticket items we buy. A car's warranty is good until the mileage/age limit is reached, no matter how many owners there have been...
