Just ordered three and maybe very shortly four Pocket Wizard Plus II units and had a few questions about them that I have been unable to answer anywhere else including after directly emailing Pocket Wizard. They are as follows:

  1. Can a standard 1/8" mono headphone extension cord be used to extend the length of the supplied flash to PW cable? Basic my issue is that I would like to mount the PW toward the bottom of the light stand rather than the top (I dont think at the distances Ill be working this will have any kind of signal problems) but need a longer cable to reach the flash head up on top.
  2. What are some of you using to carry/store these units? With four of them its a bit too many to fit into my camera bag, and I emailed PW and asked if they had or made any type of carrying case and they simply didnt answer that question. I would really like some small case that would protect them individually so they bang against each other every time I transport them. I guess an individual case for each would work too, but preferred would be at least 4 in one case. Anyone found anything like this?
  3. Lastly have any of you found a cheap cable (or perhaps made your own) to connect the PW to the 20D/30D/40D Remote control plug in so that you can fire the shutter remotely via another PW? I know PW makes a cable and the pre-trigger unit to do this, but they are IMO WAY over priced for such a cable (asking $100+ for a simple cable). Do any of you use PWs for this feature or has a cheaper meathod utilizing the PW been found?
Thanks for your help everyone. I am just trying to squeeze every ounce out of these pricey little gems as I can. :D

1. Headphone extensions are stereo cords, you want a mono miniphone cords (1/8" -3.5mm) inch cords. Read this recent thread on this issue.

2. Cannot help since there is a two question limit per your title

3. See this nice web page by Ryan Dlugosz for an inexpensive homebrew shutter release cable.

Just make sure you put them on your camera the right way :)

As for question 2: Get a pencil bag.... the little pouches at walmart or wherever. It normally has two different areas, use the front one for the cords, and the main pouch for the PWs. I fit 2 very comfortably in one. Maybe get two and put two in each. I dont think all 4 will fit.

Re question #2, I use the case that came with the 420EX and the 550EX flashes. In the 550EX case, I can easily fit 2 PW units in there but the 420EX case is a little smaller so I can only fit one. I also have the 580EX case which, I think, can also hold two PW units but my wife is using that for her iPod and accessories.

Wait isnt that the same thing I was referring to? Oh perhaps I should have left out the headphone part. Gotcha, yes just a Mono cable with an 1/8" female head on one end and an 1/8" male head on the other.

Well that seems like a great idea except that remote trigger he is using it only for the XXXD series bodies and wont work with a 40D which is what I have.

Those low-cost shutter cables are available for both connector types used by Canon. A little searching on E-Bay will reveal them.

What?

The shutter release that Ryan shows in the "how to" has the exact same connector as a 40D would require. The camera in the images is either a 20D or a 30D.

He even states the exact inexpensive shutter release model to purchase. Just punch that number in the ebay search engine.

This is all basically self serve, just read the "how to" carefully, it is all there.

Ryan is thorough.

Buy the way, Ryan's blog is a very high quality photographic related blog. He writes well and covers both technical and broader issues regarding photography in a pleasing manner. I recommend it highly.

Enjoy! Lon
