They're a little underexposed, but you can always fix that with post processing.

I agree with the exposure. Easily fixed, here's a quick go of it...

I shoot hockey pictures frequently--a very difficult task because the lighting is generally poor. Here are my hints--1) ISO 1600 or higher, 2.8 ap, shutter speed at least 1/400. If you can shoot from the penalty box without glass in front of you, that is the best. Trying to shoot through the glass gives poor results. Remember when you correct the picts, ice is not white, it is actually gray. If you set it at 254 you will blow out all of the highlights. Take one quick shot off a grey card to set your colors. Also, when the action gets close to you in the penalty box, duck--Sticks come up, etc. and I have seen people whacked with a stick trying to take pictures from the box.

I normally shoot basketball with good results. I do set WB with the WhiBal (external link) card. The lighting were I shoot is normally very good. I just need to work on my exposures a bit. I might just bring my light meter along for the ride next time.

I respectfully disagree. All the rinks I've ever been to have the subfloor painted white. being that the ice is clear, the appearance is white.

If you use a CWB shot off the ice you pics will appear white after post processing. Several on this board use this technique.

Your other suggestions are spot on.

Penalty box without glasses? The rinks I've been do all have glasses on penalty boxes. I suppose that some might not.

I like them. Agree with others on some more PP. Last pic - watch the dasher board, it's red in this shot - that's your horizon and this one needs about 1.5 - 2 degrees correction to the right.

I'm with Alan on CWB off ice. ( I do it at the end of the previous game to the one I'm going to shoot - it's whiter than just after the zamboni. ) I'd like to get a gray card though and try it for WB - some have super results with the 18% gray balance.
