New Paint Shop Pro 9

Well I just got my new Paint Shop Pro 9 and it indeed recognizes and opens RAW camera files, really slick, I don't know if it's better than the one that comes with Canon zoombrowser haven't had a chance to compare but it did open the RAW file with no problem. looks like a sweet program and about a tenth of the cost of Adobe CS. I got mine as an upgrade (full program) for $50 NOT BAD.

A couple of months ago I downloaded the demo version and it would not open a 10D raw file... Maybe I'll try again!

I don't have the 10D I have a G3 but the manual list on the pull down open menu "Raw Camera Data(*.nef,*.crw,*.dcr​,*.mrw,*.orf)" plus they list Nikon and Canon separately. I don't know how loaded the demo was but I'm sure the market version can handle all the Raw files. and even at full market price I don't think the program can be beat ($129 from them)

Yeah--I've used PSP since version 3! ANd I downloaded the demo again (maybe I downloaded v8.0 back in April) and it works with 10d images.

I also use PS 5.0 LE (bundled with something I bought...) and it seems to do a better job at Auto Levels--when I try it on PSP, it WAY "overexposes" the image. Have you found a good way in PSP to auto correct?

Auto-correct is for Wimps!

It would behoove you to spend a little bit of time learning how to do it by hand. While auto-correct will often do a decent job, it will more often fail, and very rarely do a perfect job. It's a little confusing and confounding at first, but after a bit you will get better and you will produce superior results.

At the top of this forum is a Sticky post about tutorials, and in there is one on color correction using curves. Though it's advanced it goes into PS Curves quite a bit. The info can easily be applied to PSP.

And as you will see in this topic, the end results can be amazing.

I use PSP curves a lot. But sometimes--like for holiday snaps with the in-laws--I just want to correct and print... but I'll check out the sticky as these always more to learn!

I agree 100% with Scottes about auto-correct, however I do take the wimpy (lazy way out) and use it probably more than I should, I have found that it works the best if there isn't to much correction in the first place, and generally on landscapes. I just wish more of the digital magazines out there would dedicate a little more time on PSP and not so much on photo shop, I don't think a lot of us can afford or want to spend that type of money for a program yet almost ever magazine leans towards it, while I think PSP is the number 2 photo editing program.. I have also noticed that the PSP9 manual seems to be a lot more user friendly.

Good--about the manual. The old versions left much to be desired. Just ordered my upgrade!

Paint Shop Pro 8 & RAW Data

Hi, I'm trying to configure my Paint Shop Pro to accept RAW images created with my 300D without success.
In the "File Format Preferences" under "RAW" you have to set various parameters e.g "Header Size", "Planar Mode","24 Bit Option",etc. I've tried various combinations of these settings, I've read all about the various formats and searched the Canon sights looking for relevant information to no avail.
If anyone as Version 9 working it might show the settings.

Can anyone help.

Hmmm. Not sure what the problem is. I never looked at the settings before I tried to use it. It opens the raw files from the rebel just fine on my machine.

Anyway here are the setting that are in the preferences menu:

Header Size is set at 0,
24 bit options to RGB order selected and
Interleaved (RGB RGB...) also selected.

The tab fo raw camera data has both prompt for override settings each time a raw camera format is opened and
Use imbedded image as thumbnails if possible (faster) are both selected.

These are probably the default anyway as I did not select anything from the program to start.

I open my files with PSP after I have downloaded them to the computer with BreezeBrowser.

Is there anything else that I can look up for you??

I didn't have to set anything, I did download in zoombrowser first than opened them in PSP9 with the Canon RAW under the open pull down, look for Canon RAW ( *.crw, *cr2) or RAW camera data remember there are 2 types of RAW one is for digital cameras and the other I never could figure out, something to do with high end printing or something RAW Graphics file format (*.raw) this one can't be used for the camera.

I've tried PSP 8 a long time ago and I liked it a lot, in fact in my opinion it was more powerful and user friendly than PS Elements 2.0. However, a few advanced options were lacking: colour management and 16-bit editing. Does PSP 9 have these features?

No. And I asked a question about them in one of their forums - they are very defensive about the issue and insist that it does not matter to most people, blah, blah, blah. Given the volume of queries regarding this issue and the effort put into deflecting them they have to know that it is very problematic for them going forward - especially since Elements 3.0 has added that capability. I'd look for it in version 10!

I downloaded the trial and it is nice - great noise removal feature - but I won't buy it for that reason. Also, the RAW functionality is very limited - only white balance, sharpening and EC can be adjusted. And, of course PSP is sRGB only. These are issue that I had dismissed somewhat in the past sicne I shoot mainly sRGB JPEG's but have become more interested in as I learn.

I bought Elements 3 for 49.95 at Amazon based on some good pre-release info (see my previous post) and hope it lives up to the expectations!!

Still doesn't handle AdobeRGB or 16-bit processing. Grrr. PSP is still my graphic design program of choice. But not for photos.

I just downloaded yesterday and I can't get PSP 9 to open my 20D .cr2 files either... I tried with just "open" and with the browser.
