Will PSE5 automatically adjust RAW's previously edited in DPP?

Hi team - I'm new in here, but hoping to contribute more in the future...

A quick question that was taxing me last night:

I recently took a bunch of night time RAW's at ISO 1600. I made all the changes that I wanted in DPP and at 20% size, they looked great. However, at full screen size, the images seemed very noisy and the NR tab in DPP didn't seem to do much to fix it. I then opened them in the RAW converter in PSE5 and the noise reduction here seemed to be much more effective...

Now, my question is: When opening the RAW's the second time in PSE5, will the "auto-levels" of PSE5 have changed the settings that I previously made to the files in DPP? If so, what do I do? I prefer the auto-levels funtion when batch processing in DPP, but prefer the noise reduction in PSE5. Is it possible to keep the adjustments from both?

I tried comparing the slider values for the various levels in each converter, to see if they were being changed, but I'm not convinced they all operate on the same scale... Does anyone know?

Cheers
Jez

No, you must use one or the other, you can't switch between the two raw converters.

Changes made to RAW files in DPP are saved as metadata into the RAW files themselves. This data is proprietary and Adobe doesn't know what to do with it... so it ignores it, leaving you with a RAW image in it untouched state.

Similarly, if you make a change in ACR, the changes could be saved out as .xmp metadata (not sure how this works in Elements.) Only Adobe programs can correctly read this .xmp metadata properly.

Hmm... Interesting, thanks!

So, for future reference... if I use DPP for doing batch auto-levels, but don't think it's noise reduction is up to much, what do you recommend? Keep fiddling around with the RAW's or convert to JPEG's and use some other software (Noise Ninja?)

Cheers

If DPP is your primary raw converter, convert the raw files to TIFF without doing any noise reduction and then import them to PS and apply NN noise reduction. Or import them to NN first, if using a standalone NN.
