It might not be that exciting, it's for a Medical Journal here in Canada, but it was nice to have my image chosen over the many they could have picked. Also pays for my week... (winter gets really slow here in Canada!)

Now that I have the contact, I should continue on with these guys... bi-weekly and they pay very well.

How do most of you go about getting publication contacts?

I generally don't get contracts per se. They call me when they have a need, we negotiate a price based on day rate vs space and usage. I submit an estimate with my terms attached, and they respond with a scanned or faxed signed estimate, or negotiate, and we work from there.

There are some magazines that have their own contracts that they ask photographers to sign, other just review the photographers policies and terms and negotiate from there. Some contracts are fine, some are far from it. We keep a sharpie handy to cross out the offending text which usually works :) One thing we learn quick, is that we don't have to accept their contract as presented if it conflicts with our terms or policies. All contracts can, and many times should, be negotiated to be fair and acceptable for both parties.

This needs to be in bold type: One thing we learn quick, is that we don't have to accept their contract as presented if it conflicts with our terms or policies. All contracts can, and many times should, be negotiated to be fair and acceptable for both parties.

I believe he said contacts, not contracts... :)

Contacts, they're everywhere - some guys don't like to be contacted and make it hard to find, others are open. Either way they're out there with enough searching around.

Contracts, what PhotosGuy said.

Yeah, I am more interested in Contacts right now.. once those pan out, then contracts might come into the picture. I still find it hard here in Canada.. but I am probably looking in the wrong places... nothing says I can't sell to a USA publication either... that's what all the resources seem to be for.
