I'm in the market for a new camera bag. I started searching this forum thinking that I wanted a backpack. The sticky with all of the bags is great but quiet overwhelming. I currently have a 30D, 70-200L, 85 1.8, kit lens, 580 flash, and misc items (filters, battery charger, etc). I plan on upgrading to a 1D in the not too distant future.

Any recommendations on backpacks/bags that will still be useable once I convert from a 30D to a 1D? BTW...I think that I would like the ability to carry a laptop in the same bag.

Look at the Kata R-102 or R-103 backpacks. They are tough and many people love them.

i currently sport a backpack & a messenger bag.

tamrac expedition 5 & a crumpler 7MDH

i use the 7MDH 99% of the time and use the tamrac backpack as a storage device.

i originally bought the back pack to use while on my mountain bike but i refucse to use it while walking around downtown chicago which i do often on the weekends. to get anything out of the back pack you have to physically remove it from your body unzip it so that it is completely open and then close it up.

the 7MDH i can just leave to my side or on my back and when needed swing it around tot he front, open the flap pull out what i need and away i go.

theres no worries when i have it so the bag is hanging behind me as the velcro is hard to open & i have the clasp closed so you would 100% know if someone was touching it

30D & 28-135 kit lens, 50mm F/1.8 MKII, monopod, tipod w/pan tilt head, 430EX w/ sto-fen omni bounce,

On the brown truck, due 10/26 ... 70-200 2.8L IS :D

I think for what you are carrying a shoulder bag is going to be much more convenient than a backback.

In terms of quality you aren't going to beat a Tenba. Their Pro Digital here is $99 at B&H.

These are all good suggestions! I went shopping and looked at the Expedition series which looked cool. Now, after reading these posts, I think I should consider the shoulder bags.

So many choices!

I just got one of these. Only been a few days but I quite like it - I'll have a proper review up over the holidays.

Here is what I do, the transformer of backpacks. Take your belt system components (holsters, lens cases etc...) and mount them in this backpack.

Then when traveling, you can transform it into a belt system, a backpack system, a shoulder bag etc....

Spreading the load will save you. I hauled my set up around San Francisco for a couple days with my backpack. I do have a shoulder bag that allows me not to take everything. I didn't come close to using everything (two flashes, remote, various accessories). If I had used the shoulder bag I would have died. The backpack was heavy enough and at the end of the day I could feel it.

Especially if you want to carry a laptop I would suggest the following:
