Actually, if you can take an EF-S, the 17-55IS over the 17-40.

Tokina 50-135mm f2.8. SHARP with insane build quality. I think I could back over it and it would be OK :)

Sigma 30mm is not too shabby, either.

I think my favorite non L lense would have been my 35-135 USM back when I was still shooting film. But now in the digital world, it would be my 100 2.8. It takes some amazing pics even if it is me operating the camera. Then again, I get a lot of keepers from my nifty/fifty. Humm, mabe I should think a little more about this.

I've heard a lot of good things about the 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 I just found one on craigslist after looking for it A LOT. this baby is hard to find nowadays. As of now my favorite non-L would be the canon 85 f1.8 but when the 70-210 gets here I will let you guys know, I'm actually excited to get a 20 year old lens :)

I know I already states my favorite non-L lens as being the 17-55 IS, but I got to thinking. The Canon 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 is an outstanding performer as well. It gives the 70-200L f/4 a run for its money!

My fav non L would be the 85 1.8 that I sold away to get a more usable FL - 50 1.4. I will one day buy back the 85mm, after I get the 100 macro non IS and 400mm 5.6L.

Sigma 24mm f/1.8 Macro

I have the 35L, 50L, 85L, 200L and wanting the 135L, and also have three L zooms... but still won't get rid of this sigma.

Have gotten rid of every other non L lens because I found they didn't perform well enough at their widest aperture. The sigma at 1.8 is just as good as my 35L at 1.4 (focus wise)

Enjoy using an EF 28-200mm f3.5-5.6 USM on the 1DMk2. For general shooting, it covers most situations. Wish Canon would make an L lens in this zoom range.

Probably the 17-55IS. It should be an L.

Canon 85mm 1.8 stays at the top of the list I have used, even tho I sold mine to fund new L zooms.
Now the Canon 24-105 f/4 IS and 70-200 f/4 IS are my lenses.
Canon 50 1.2 may end up on my buy list, but due to funds will have to wait.
These are my (3) trinity lenses.
