Gonna post a couple pics for some C&C. All are taken through the glass (:() using my Canon XTi with the EF 85mm 1.8 lens. Settings are 1/640, f/2.2 ISO800. Unfortunately I don't get to sit rinkside for the actual games so these are all pre-game warmup. Just looking to see what I might be able to do to tweak them and get things that much better in camera, without needing gear I can't buy/use and a press pass. THX in advance.

edit to fix my brain fart :P

A couple more.

edit - the Kipper pic is 1/500. I step down when the players are close to the glass and hardly moving. Yes I know there are reflections... I do my best to avoid them but it's tough.

It's all thanks to the lens, the EF 85mm f/1.8. I shoot at f/2.2 which has given me the best results. If I shoot from the second level during practices I can step up to 1/800. Unfortunately the camera itself is tricky to get the right focus and vey easliy fooled. Plus 3fps shooting just isn't fast enough most times but my overall timing has gotten better.

I've often wondered what the 85f/1.8 would do for hockey. I think these are nice shots.

It's great from the front row. Just about perfect to get the goalie fully in frame shooting portrait. Of course with no telephoto capabilities it is limiting when players move around. Tough to get a great close-up when you can't zoom out, and 85mm is still a little limited for distance. Though the glass and I'm sure the camera body reduce the image sharpness quality as the focus moves farther out. I've been thinking about the 100mm f/2.0 since it's still about the same size physically as the 85mm so I shouldn't be hasseled using it (stupid NHL!).

I have so many pics to choose from it's tough, but here's 2 more.

He was being sarcastic. You meant to put 640 was your shutter speed, not FPS lol

He knew what you meant as well as everyone else..

Yeah I got that after the fact.:o It's been awhile since I've poked around these forums and after reading a ton of HD media boards fps was stuck in my head.

Stll, lots of views and hardly any comments?

I like the Kiprusoff shot.
The Phaneuf shot is cool, but I think it (and others) needs some PP - level it 2 degrees right, crop it tighter, kick the colour and take out some noise. Pretty much the same for shot of Sarich.

Also - by POTN posting rules, a few of these are too big. Longest side no greater than 800.

Thanks for some tips. There's been no PP done on any of the pics other than cropping, and all have been sized down. As for posting rules, wasn't aware I went over as these are just linked from photobucket. FYI to me for next time.

Just trying to see if there's any tips I can use to improve the shots in camera but of course any PP tips are welcome to. I know very little on this aspect other than balancing some levels, maknig very minor touch-ups and I do use Noise Ninja on the noise.

Good stuff Cman. Nothing like having all the light you could ever want. I have been shooting a lot of Hitmen lately, and all I can say about getting a press pass is good luck. I have been accredited at quite a few things, and have the training to do the job, but they wont even flinch at anyone who is not with any of the following: Getty, Reuters, Sun, Herald.

Keep shooting the warmups man, maybe someone will take notice!

Many already have. The ice crew have seen many of my pics, as well has Beesley (Flames arena announcer) and countless fans. The "Kipper Kid"'s dad says my shots are better than most hockey cards, which is a comment I take in stride. I've never sold a photo that I've taken, infact I've given away quite a few. It's mostly just my personal hobby and there's nothing better than scoring a great shot and presenting it to the player to autograph. MY dream ATM would be to get access to shoot a non-gameday full team practice from between the benches with a 70-200 lens. That, or just be allowed in the lower bowl on non-gamedays.

Speaking of light, ever shot in that dump up the QE2? Here's a couple I got from my last trip. If I'm not mistaken they should be 1/500 f/2.2 ISO800 all with my 50mm 1.8 lens. I was shocked to just walk right in the building with the camrea slung over my shoulder. Other people were getting patted down like they were entering a court building or something. Yes, Yeller is looking right at me.
