300D noise...

Hopefully this will have a simple answer.

In conjunction with the lenses in my signature, it seems that unless I have absolutely optimum light, I get lots of noise at ISO 400 and even ISO 200. By optimum light, I mean a bright sunny day with no over cast. One those days, it is happy with my f-stop, shutter speed, and ISO all perform normally for the lighting. It feels like the sensor is starting to go bad since it was never this noisy or light picky when I first got it three years ago.

I have made sure my lenses and sensor are clean. Yet, there is no improvement and it is out of warranty with 3,387 pictures on it.

What is my "simple" answer? I am considering upgrading to a newer body and a newer standard range zoom lens, but I am hopeful there is something I could do to help my old 300D.

ISO 800, F/4, 1/30 - The dates on the file are incorrect. The table cloth is a solid light purple and more noise can be seen on the napkins and silverware. I know this is not an ISO 400 image, but this is the best example I have on me with out obtaining permission to post the photographs. :P This is the same level of noise I am getting in my ISO 400 photographs.

Doesn't look too bad for an ISO 800 photo from the original digital rebel.

Maybe I have staring at photographs from higher cameras or something for too long. Maybe I just need to get better low light lenses.

or shoot with iso 100-200 in the bright light? i have an xti, and i have the same issues at iso 1600. but that is used* strictly indoors, or at concerts.

but if you want a quick fix to your noise problems try noise ninja or something. it helps out quite a bit.

The tablecloth is a solid color? Very strange. I'd expect to see noise in the underexposed wood paneling in the background, and there is a little there. The tablecloth is very bad.

I don't know what to suggest - I also have a 300D and I shoot at 800 most of the time. Noise is generally hard to see in my shots.

Was this picture seriously underexposed, perhaps? And recovered in post processing?

Shrug. At 680 X 463 we can't see the noise anyway. I was looking at the original at 100%.

I looked at the RAW file.

That doesn't look bad AT ALL to me. That is perfectly acceptable. Really, I'd be quite happy with the noise levels in that photo. And I shoot with a mark III which is supposed to be low noise king.

You don't see the speckles in the purple tablecloth? They're very obvious here.

Oddly, there are no speckles on the purple jellybeans. I see very slight noise on some of the silver.

Alexia, are you sure the tablecloth was a solid color?

The tablecloth has texture. It will not show up solid, especially with such a harsh light source blasting it. So of course it will show up speckled.

Look at the chair back in the top left corner. That is darker than the tablecloth and should be more prone to shadow noise, yet it is very clean, as there is almost no texture to it.

I still stand by my statement that the posted photo has VERY acceptable noise levels.

I agree, all I see even in raw is the specks in the table cloth. Can't be noise if the dark wood and chair doesn't have any. I have two 300D's and I think these are great for ISO 800

What are you expecting? Shoot at iso 100-200 with a flash, or upgrade your camera. Your 300D, like everyone else's, can't be expected to have the same iso performance of any of it's younger brothers. The 300D is a great camera, but just like the 1D, I wouldn't expect miracles in low light.
