I was driving around Fayetteville, AR, and found a confederate cemetary. I found this one tombstone where someone had placed a confederate flag.

I was just surprised to find that someone was still placing a Confederate flag by the tombstone. It just got me to thinking that the Civil War really wasn't that long ago. My father was born in 1906 and had uncles that fought in the Civil War. As a child I imagine he sat around at the family get togethers and listened to the old men talk about the war. I just wish I had talked to my father and grandfather while they were living and found out more about what they had heard from the war veterans.

Very interesting photographs. :-)

I had a look on the internet and found a reference to the person buried there. It appears that he was from a historically significant family in that area:

Jacob Wythe Walker is mentioned in the second to last paragraph and was the eldest son of David Walker whose historical record is linked above.

You beat me to it. I was going to do the same thing. Interesting article. It's neat to see history come to life. My kids are begging us to go back to Williamsburg, VA because of the history.

It's not everyday that you hear of children showing such an interest in history. :-) It sounds as if you've done a good job showing them that there is actually life outside a computer game!

Heck, I'm routinely around several thousand RVs that have them. The flags, not tombstones...

(Think NASCAR...)

My kids, at least the 8 and 6 year olds, are allowed on the computer for 15 minutes a day for "fun stuff." They have their own laptop (shared between them) with educational stuff, including games, that they can be on. They're only allowed on the net on my laptop and I'm sitting right there with them. Yes, they have a fondness of history. I love the fact that their into history and that kind of stuff. I really wasn't as a kid. My son is begging to go to the Smithsonian and he's only 6. I don't know why. He's never been there. I just hope they stick with it.

I just glad they didn't inherit the "big boned" gene.
