Cropping & Resolution

Why would cropping affect the quality of a photo. I mean the no. of, let's call them dots, is the same per a given area. So resolution should stay the same as long as you print in the new reduced size.

I'm sure I'm messing things up here, so any clarification would be appreciated.

Your are correct. Cropping never injures a dot or pixel or whatever you want to call them. It just throws them away.

OTOH, image rotation at non-multiples of 90 degrees can cause slight image degradation.

Sometimes we crop our favorite part of the image and then try to print at a resolution more appropriate to the original size resolution. Then you may have a problem with image degradation - some of which can be minimized with good upsizing technique.
