My original thought was to get a 70-200 f4 IS so I borrowed a friends sigma 70-200 and found most of my shots were at the long end. It worked out great at the zoo shooting wildlife but I found myself wanting a little more reach. Now I'm thinking a 200 f2.8 + 1.4TC or a 300 f4...then again the 100-400 is another option too....ah I'm so torn

Looking at what you already have, I'd say the EF 70-200/4 IS would be a great fit. It does take TCs well. If instead you got a 300, you'd have a large gap.

Since the 70-200 worked out well for you, I would suggest you get the 70-200 f/2.8 and use a 1.4x or 2x TC with it. Either the Canon or the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 (Sigma is cheaper and just as good...unless you want IS).

I picked up my 70 - 200 2.8 NON IS for around $850 used in excellent condition. If you shoot on a monopod or all moving objects, I would for go the IS and get the 2.8 for the same money as a f4 IS. You will want the 2.8 more than the IS.....

All the 70 - 200's take the TC's extremely well. Just keep in mind you lose a stop...so why not start at 2.8 and end up with 4 with the TC????

The correct answer is YES . Now what was that question?

Seriously you might also consider Canons 70-300 IS lenses, I have the more expensive DO version and find that it is a wonderful lens for me. There is perhaps some image quality sacrifices along with the constant aperture of the 70-200 L's but you gain the advantage of not drawing as much attention as a big white lens seems to draw also.

You can check out images taken with all of these lenses at Pixel-peepers.

The sigma 70-200 was nice but I want the IS my hands arent the most steady anything under 1/200 shutter speed was hard to get a keeper so IS would be nice...and the canon 70-200 f2.8 IS is a little more than I wanted to spend unless I can pick one up used for a good deal
