Everyone has mixed feelings about post processing images, and some well they just don't know how powerfull applications like adobe photoshop can be!... check this video out... (external link)

To what extent is it considered too much?

To me that's not photography, that's photoshop, and there's nothing wrong with that - it's impressive photoshop :p

that video has made the rounds quite a few times. It's seriously impressive in terms of what photoshop can do and makes you wonder about every print ad you see. There is also that dove commercial one that's probably closer to the amount of post processing that goes on for ads.

how far is too much? when the spirit of the shot is misrepresented it too far I believe. now that's pretty vague but that's the best i can do I think.
