*cough* "fast, at least f/2" (from the OP's first post)

That kinda rules out any zoom ;)

*cries in a corner*

Nobody seems to talk about the Canon 20mm f/2.8 USM - Is it a pile of poo?

This would give you 32mm fov on a 1.6x crop - I like a 35mm fov on FF/35mm although it is a bit slow for a prime.

No, it isnt. Photo from my EF 20mm 2.8

Looks nice! - I'm going to see if I can try one out locally(ish) - problem is not many places seem to actually stock it :-(

I'm sure I'll be happy with it, and its loads cheaper than the 24L!

Is your USM 'noisy'? that seems to be a complaint I keep on coming across.

Nope. USM seems normal to me. I use my 20mm all the time on my 1.6 crop camera.

You've obviously never been in my house, my grandmother's house, or my sister's house. Or probably any other average home or church for that matter. And no, I don't want to and/or can't always take the easy way out with the use of flash.

What I'm saying is just because it doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean there's no legitimate use for it. OP stated his needs. OP doesn't have to justify his needs to anyone.

No, he doesn't have to justify his needs or wants, and my first response to the OP was an attempt to answer the question directly. But if we knew the application, those of us with wider knowledge or longer experience may be able to offer alternatives. The teaching/learning element of this forum is one of its great strengths.

As you correctly suggest, there will always be someone who would like a little more sensitivity, whatever is on offer, but a wider aperture is not the only answer. You mention flash, which is one, but also an f/2.8 lens with IS may be more use (in a church or other dark building) than an f/2 lens without, and no one has yet mentioned a tripod, in my view the most overlooked tool in the photographer's kit.

But if it's candlelit wrestling, then yes, you'll probably need the fastest lens and highest ISO, whatever it is.

Mark.
