I'm concerned about long term storage for my digital negatives and I'd like to start out by doing what's best. Is it better to burn to a CD or DVD. I assume a DVD. Can someone shed some light on this for me.

Thanks so much,
Bridget

Don't know about the life of a CD vs. DVD. I'd just say if you have less than 700MB of files use a CD, otherwise use a DVD. :)

Store on high-quality, non-bargain DVD only. Consider that two-layer writers are approaching affordability and will soon (within 6 months) become the norm. Store all media in a dark, temperature stable (as humanly-possible) space.

For the ultra-anal, store multiple copies in multiple locations.

Within a year or so, blue-laser DVD's will then be norm and we'll be storing multi-terrabytes and not gigabytes per DVD.

I use both CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, CD-Rs being the primary backups (I can burn them right away) and DVD-Rs (I burn them when I have enough files to fill a DVD-R) being the secondaries. I also keep copies on a separate hard drive.

Are you talking about the media or the hardware (burner)? For media, any of the well-known brand name ones should be fine. I'm partial to the Pioneer and the Apple myself.

RIDATA 8x DVD-R at NewEgg. Best compatibility and dirt cheap. I also picked up a dual layer NEC burner not too long ago for under $80. I've maybe gone thru 25 or 30 of these discs so far, and not 1 coaster. :P

Any disc with Taiyo Yuden (sp?) dyes, usually branded Japanese makes.

AFAIK TY dyes have extra ingredients for longevity which the cheaper discs don't have.

(I'm recalling this information for a web page I read a few weeks ago so I could be wrong)
