I got an er99 on my XTi while trying to take pictures today. So I did the following to try to remedy it:

* Removed batteries from grip. Reinserted batteries.

* Tried 2 other lenses.

* Removed grip. Inserted a fresh battery into now non-gripped camera.

* Cleaned lens contact area on camera and on lens gently with a pencil eraser.

* Tried 2 other memory cards.

* Reformatted a memory card in camera.

* Let camera sit with switch on "on" without a battery. Reinserted battery.

Nothing worked. I still get the er99 message on my camera. Is there anything else I should try before I contact Canon? (And of course the warranty ended earlier this month.)

There is another battery in there - you may possibly need to use the manual to find it - it is a small disc battery - like a watch battery.

Remove that one (along with the main one) and let it sit a while.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Well, I tried it and the only new thing that happened was that I had to reset the date and time.

Still got the er99 message after I tried to take a picture.

One of the things Canon had me do before sending my camera back is to remove the lens, place on the body cap and take a pic. I was still getting ERR99's so they said to send it back.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Spyarling said he already tried another lens..

I was working with a troubled 300D that I borrowed, it was attached to a year-old 70-200mm f/2.8 IS, tried:

-re-attaching lens
-removing/replacing batteries
-removing/replacing memory cards

I was shooting a basketball game, missed the entire first half of the game... tinkered around with the camera settings and decided to play with everything, turned out putting the camera into Mirror Lock-up mode worked.

Try Mirror Lock-Up Mode

Hope Err99 goes away

Tried it after reading your post. Didn't work. I appreciate your help though.

Yes, I got the original message with my Tamron lens attached. Tried it again with the Canon 18-55 and then with the nifty. Nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion. Had I still had my camera in my possession I would have tried that.

I went online to the Canon site last night and had a repair order drawn up. My camera is on its way now. I was depressed most of yesterday thinking about my poor broken camera, so I wanted it fixed right away. The good news is that it is still under warranty. It was purchased on 12/04/06 so I thought that the warranty ended on 12/04/07. I guess the warranty is still good for the rest of the month. I'm so glad I didn't dawdle.

Didn't work as in didn't get an ERR99 or did get an ERR99. If you did not get one, then the problem is in the lenses. If you still got one then the problem is in the body.

Did get the er99 message.

Now I just patiently wait.

*UPDATE*

I got my XTi back today. That's not too shabby of a time frame. I shipped it out 12/24/07 and got it back today, 01/07/08. That's about 8 business days from the time it left my house. And it's as good as new.

This is what it said under Service Details:

We have examined the product according to your request, and, it was found that the internal component was inoperative the shutter did not operate properly The Shutter Ass'y was replaced. Other electrical adjustments, inspection and cleaning and parts replacements were carried out.

I'm a little disappointed that the shutter broke after only about 10K - 15K clicks. But at least now I get another 6 month warranty on the shutter.

Spyraling;
Did you check the Online Repair Tracking (ORT)while your camera was in the shop....if so; was it updated?
My 40D has been at the NJ repair site since 12/19...w/out any updates other than a change in the viewing date.
I called 1/7 for an update and was told due to the holidays and that the NJ site had been closed down 4 days for both Christmas and New Years week which directly contributed to the delay in service.
I'll be calling again today......

i think i had that same msg with a 30d and the sigma 70-200 2.8
i found out later that sigma had a bad batch of these 70-200 2.8s for canon
something about the chip inside the lens thathad to be replaced

i had two camera bodies at the time of the event so i had to resort to shooting one body and changing lenses

but later i removed the sigma lens...then removed the battery grip...put on the 24-105L ... then the battery grip...
and the camera worked flawless all night
