Deb, getting used to manual exposure is a great way to learn about the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and film (sensor speed), and something I think everyone should get a grip on. When I learned I had no choice, as that is all there was. Shortly after AV and TV cameras started coming out. I hardly ever shoot in manual now, but use AV or TV. If you are relying on the camera metering for exposure you get the same result. If you need to expose higher or lower than what the camera metering says, I then adjust the Exposure Compensation (EC) to get it right. When I first started using the EC I was always confused as to which way to go. I worked out a little helping saying, "If the background is bright, go to the right" (basically exposing a bit more). Now if I shoot a subject with a dark background I know to move the EC over to the left so I don't over expose the subject.
