I'm one of the aforementioned ones that have taken an interest in Flash Photography. I keep it at ISO 100-200 and chimp like crazy. I use the aperture to adjust the brightness of the flash. I set the speed to the synch speed of the camera, usually 1/200 or 1/250. I tend to ramble. Feel free to put me on ignore.

Where do you go from there? Pick a shutter and aperture that you want shoot chimp adjust or something more scientific? Generally choose an aperture/ISO combination, take a shot, Look at the histogram, figure out how many stops up or down I need to go, and adjust accordingly. If I'm trying to achieve a particular DOF, I'll adjust ISO to get as close as I can. puddlepirate44 wrote in post #4804250 Nice set up, Mike. Did you use diffusers? The only diffusers are the walls the lights are aimed at. For Christopher's monthly photos, I use umbrellas. Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler - Albert Einstein

That's one more thing. Depending on what I'm doing, I'll use a lower than sync speed for shutter to balance ambient, or affect how visible lamps will appear. This does require some trial and error, depending on whether I'm just balancing ambient, or attempting some sort of effect. Final Image with chosen ambient value: Final ambient value, with flash disabled: Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler - Albert Einstein

Sometimes, if my aperture is to wide open, I'll use the flash comp. There are so many different factors to adjusting the light, main ones being the flash comp and the aperture (I don't usually mess with the shutter speed unless I absolutely have to), that each person usually develops their own system and style of creating the right flash for the shots they're taking.
