Im thinking about getting one, I want a lens bigger then the kit but smaller then the 75-300. I didnt know if this was a good size to have or not.

I would suggest going for one of the Canon 28-80 or 90mm lenses instead - but these are just older kit lenses designed for the film eos cameras. they are not expensive, so I see little reason why anyone would go third party for one of this class of lens. In addition there may be compatibility issues with older models. And finally, i think they add little to what the current EF-S kit lens already gives you.

I have a 28-80 that came with my film eos, and I have never used it on my 20D - seems pointless. If you are looking for a value lens to add versatility, I'd say get yourself a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II and see how you like a fast prime!

Not quite sure what you meant by bigger and smaller. A good start would be a Tamron 17-50/2.8. Later add one of the many fine 70-200's available. 50/1.8 if you need something for low light. And, sell the 2 lenses you already have when you can. I almost forgot to mention the new kit lens 18-55 IS. Good value.

im on a budget :). i found the tamron 28-80 f/3.5-5.6(no clue what those even mean lol) wide angle telephoto autofocus on ebay. i just want something with a better zoom then my kit but not to much of a zoom b/c of my 75-300.

Heather, there's no point getting that lens given what you already have - it adds nothing.

Save up and get yourself something either fast, like one of those 16/17-50/55 f/ 2.8 lenses or get something longer like the sigma 17-70 or the Canon EF-s 17-85 IS lenses - they would add to what you already have.

BTW the numbers relate to the widest open the lens can be , depending on the zoom setting. An f/2.8 lens lets in twice as much light as an f/4 lens. ie the f/2.8 lens is 'faster'. Prime lenses like the 50mm f/1.8 and f/1.4 lenses let in even more light. and the fastest lenses Canon makes are the very heavy and expensive 50mm f/1.2 L and 85mm f/1.2L lenses.

slower lenses such as the kit lenses autofocus slower, and give darker viewfinders. In addition they tend to be lower quality optically, though for most people the differences are slight and don't really affect photographic ability. We just like the 'good' lenses more, and if you spend any time here you'll find that out soon enough!

I actually had this lens before. This is a great lens for the price (less than $70), but it wouldn't be worth your time or money to purchase this lens based on your current lenses. Save up for a slightly better one.
