G6 AF

I love my G6 it’s a belter however is the 9 point AF only available in auto mode? When using other modes the AF is either centre or manually placed anywhere in the field of view. This is great apart from when you are after opportunist shots where you need more control but you could do with the camera grabbing off centre subjects.

I guess i just live with it then?

Unfortunately I don't own a G6. However - is it not possible to change the focussing mode using the button on the left hand "shoulder" of the camera? (It may have moved since the G3!) - the one that looks like a square with a dot in the middle (looks a bit like an eye)??

If not - is it not possible to set the focussing mode and then save your settings as one of the custom presets into C1/C2?

Alnath, I have not yet seen the G6 and my G3 does not support the 9 point autofocus function but I am familiar with my wife's S400 which allows one to turn AIAF on or off when using modes other than Auto. I think it is unlikely that the G6 will be different in this respect.
Switch to P mode for example and press the menu button. You will probably find an option there to turn AIAF on or off. I would recommend always leaving it off but that is up to you

It isnt avilable in any of the modes other than auto and in the "creative" section. It isnt something i wanted to use frequently but it would have been nice to at least have the option.

The 9-point AF mode is selectable in other modes as well. See page 89 of manual. The manual is a bit confusing. The AUTO mode on the mode dial is NOT auto selection, which is the 9-point AF mode. To select the nine-point AF mode when not in AUTO mode (e.g. when in Tv, Av, etc.) press the SET (AF-Frame Selector) button. Then use the main dial, which is the black dial located behind the shutter button for selecting between auto selection (9-point) or center-point AF. (Note the main dial is also used for shutter and aperature selection.) Good luck!

I have a G3, and have only taken a few shots with cameras that have 9 point, so maybe I have not used 9 point enough to become familiar with it, but I find it rather cumbersome.

I find it easier to use center point auto focus, focus on what I want by holding the shutter button half way, then recomposing. I change the metering modes between spot, center weighted and evaluative depending on the lighting conditions.
