Attending stuntwars in lakeland, fl in 2 weeks and will be renting a lense for this. I have a media pass so I should be able to get some good shots. Looking to rent either a 100-400 EF lens or a 28-300 EF lens. As far as distance goes, the track width is about as wide as a football field and I would have sideline access. Is 400mm overkill? and at the same time, would 100mm be too much? I would like to be able to get nice tight shots both close to me and far away...I have never used a 300 or a 400 so not sure how close is close.

Thoughts?

Cory1848,

I've have the 100-400 and found it to be quite sufficient for what you'll be shooting, the only down side(IMHO) is you need good light. Mine seems to be flat on cloudy/overcast days. Enjoy the event, looking forward to seeing your posts!

Thanks, If its still available I think I will give it a shot (no pun intended). Saturday is qualifying for the main event on Sunday, so Saturday will be my practice day too...

Sounds to me that your not a fan of stuntwars...

I do have my 28-135mm, I can use, Its not L glass but it performs pretty well. The few shots that I would like to get I know I will need over 100, but for taking random candid pit shots, the 100 maybe too long...Will be a good learning experience...

All depends on where you are standing really. If they let you stand right next to the guardrail a 24-70 should be plenty for the slow stuff, If they are doing it on the dragstrip part of the track. If you want to get them mid track your def going to need something longer. All my boys I ride with are going, have fun and be safe.

I think 100-400 is a bit long for what your doing. I think he 70-200 would be a good length.

If you're renting, I would go for a 70-200 f2.8 and a 300 f2.8. That would give you a good range to cover both sides of the arena/track, and enough speed if the lighting is crap. Any thoughts on flash?

No flash, shooting daytime and I dont think a flash would have enough distance to do anything. I am close but not that close.

Looking for a lense that I really dont have to swap out much. Really think I need a zoom. Mainly cause never know where the best shot will be. Expected to be sunny all day for the weekend. My main choices are the 100-400 4.5 -5.6 and a 28-300 3.5-5.6.

What advantage is the 70-200 over the 28-300 besides one stop?

This event for me is mainly practice shooting...Its 7 miles from my house so it is really convenient. I do ride sportbikes, but I am not really into the stunting scene at all, its just fun to watch and I got a media pass as well to that is a plus. I am still waiting to receive an agreement from them on the terms, but the lady in charge said all they want is copies on a CD. didnt say what size or resolution....;)
