Are you kidding me? The pix below demonstrate the 40D @ iso3200. The light consisted of two 40 watt overhead generic bulbs. The 2nd photo was Noise Ninjaed using the 30D profile. 100% Crops to follow for more comparison.

Yup, the noise is sweet at ISO 3200. Couldn't be happier!

Yup it does look good, better than my XT was at ISO 800. Can't wait to put it to real world tests shooting a wedding in February and Sports this spring.

I've been thinking about upgrading from an XTi. This is a more compelling endorsement than any "professional" review I've read. Looks great.

I heartily agree.
I'm so impressed with the 40D's noise capabilities. I know people have said around here that it's no better than the 30D but I just see it's heads and tails above. I never shot above iso 600 on the 30D just because of the issues with cleaning it up. But have no problems with using 1250 on indoor lower light shoots, with very minimal NR. I'd still put the 5D and M3 above it in handling noise (but for a premium price tag), however, I think 40D is by far worth every dime spent on it. I'm so shocked at all it's capabilities for the consumer price.

Looks pretty good to me.
I still say you get more margin for error on the 5D.

It's when you don't have the luxury to nail the shot and things deteriorate pretty quickly that this becomes apparent.

Anyways, impressive!

Did the camera's NR function have anything to do with the results?

Let me add my praise for the high ISO performance of the 40D. I don't shoot much indoors or in artificial light, but I often find myself in heavily shaded woods looking for critters with f/5.6 max,. Being able to set the ISO upwards of 800 without worrying too much about IQ is a great blessing.

I can't offer anything on the 40D, but I can definitely recommend NN. It's fantastic.

I've seen the tests but I've done many real world shots with both as well as the 5D and M3 & xt and in order of high iso abilities its goes:

M3 (because it has very usable 6400 iso)

5D
edit: forgot about the M2n...it handled higher iso's very well too
40D

30D
xt

For me, the 30D shots were just almost unusable above iso 600. I wasn't pleased with it at all. It had other good features (I owned 2 copies) but that just wasn't one of them imo.

Something was wrong with either you or your specific 30D. Not all 30Ds are "unusable above ISO600" - I had mine at ISO3200 regularly for basketball.
