You can get the first version for under $100 normally. It's a great lens. I never had any issues with the bokeh from either of mine. You would definately prefer this lens over the 28-105 f4.5-5.6 you say you have. It will be night and day.

Actually I said I had the EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. I find it quite good. The 28-105 f/4-5.6 is pretty poor. The 28-70 f/3.5-4.5 isn't to replace the 28-135, but to give me an option for a close-focussing, small, light but hopefully sharp zoom.

Thanks for those reviews. Since all of the reviews are quite good for the mark II. I think I'll order the mark II version then and leave the mark I for someone else. Maybe it is great too, but since it is the mark II that was reviewed, it probably is the good one.

There is no such beast. Over the years, Canon has had a few 28-105 models. The better of them being the EF 28-105 f/3.5-f/4.5 USM II with seven aperture blades. The original design only had five. You must be referring to the dog of a kit lens they introduced - the EF 28-105 f/4-f/5.6. It sucks at any price.

Hope the 28-70 works out for you.

That's the one I meant. I couldn't remember the exact aperture, because I've never even given it much consideration at all.

I was always happy with the 5-bladed 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM. I used it quite a lot, and got my wife one as well. It was always a great performer, and once in a while I miss having it. Eventually I'm sure I'll find something better, but once in a while I wish I hadn't sold it off.

Thanks for everyone's help with this. I ended up buying the 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II with the hood and it is a damn good lens. It is slightly weird with the retracting filter ring but so what. It is just amazingly sharp even though it is old.

There are some smaller profile Canon 52mm lens caps that will fit this lens and partially retract into the front of the lens.

If you use the 28-70 on a crop camera, you can add two 52mm extension rings on the front. This extend the filter threads enough so that you can use a polarizing filter without any problems. This trick also works on the 28-80 USM MkI.

Good idea. It is kind of awkward otherwise and vignetting isn't an issue on a Rebel XT with this lens. I put one of the new 52mm caps on it. The old style caps with the black letters stuck out past the filter ring.

Since there are a lot of people using this camera, I'd post my experience and question here.

I got this camera as a hand-me-down from my dad's old 35mm camera. When I use it with the XTi it seems that there are occassions when it will show ERROR 99 and requires me to restart the camera.

I find that it usually happens when the camera is taking a shot with really small aperture (16-22) or even smaller. Anyone has such experience with this lens? Is there a way to make sure when it will happen? Because sometimes it happens, sometimes it's not.

EDIT: Also it seems that this lens is having a hard time focussing under lower light condition. Sometimes I have to use manual focus because of this. Anyone with experience?

Thanks

Nice pictures!

I am finding this to be quite a good lens and I like how small and light it is too.
