What am i doing wrong? This was a fly i found in the house and it was dying. So i took a few pics of it indoors. Original are RAW.
Settings were 1/160 f16 ISO 100. A daylight light and the flash were used.

Why does my fly look so boring? I am pretty well pleaded with the DOF as this is one of the first, apart from the caterpillar. I have used the 60mm lens on this.

yep...it's a fly....
I would try getting up in his face, what makes the macro shot for me is the amazing detail you see that you wouldn't necessarily see when looking at an object with the naked eye. Get closer and pic a portion of your subject that has amazing detail. For me the fly's face and his wing, maybe his legs, are probably the most interesting things about him so get up close and fill the frame with only half his face or a small portion of his wing that has a great design and leading lines.

the lighting is harsh and the angle is wrong,,try again this time try shutter speed 200 and get down to face level.

looks soft to me.plenty of dof tho.thats why your be better off to get down to face level and drop to f11..u can get perfect shots at fstop 16 mayby u moved the camera slightly when taking the pic..lots of pratice with fstops settings.what flash u using?

As others have said try and get a different angle on it. As MJ has said get the shutter up to around 1/200 and experiment with different appeatures.

As for the shot it looks sharp on my monitor but it is overexposed and it looks like the WB is off as it has a blue cast to it.

add some extension tube to the 60EFS, diffuse the flash with a plain white sheet of kitchen towel, shoot between f8 and f11.
