I have the following lens for my 5D:

Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L
Sigma 15-30mm
Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro

I was planning to buy the 24-70mm f2.8 when a friend advised me that he had returned same after experiencing edge to edge focus inconsistencies and purchased the 24-105 instead. Is the 24-105 a superior lens to the 24-70mm? I am looking for mainstay lens for my 5d - the 'always on' lens. I want this lens to be a keeper, so I am aiming for best in class in this range.

The Sigma is going, as the barrel distortion is too high and people always look funny with this lens at anything close to its widest setting. My sense is that I will make do with 24mm for now and maybe eventually get Canon's 17-40mm L (which I owned and sold ). Any advice welcome.

I have both; the 24-70 lives on my 5D; it's only displaced by the 15-30 Sigma or the 70-200 L. The 24-105 only comes out for those rare occasions when I need something longer than 70 and the 70-200 can't focus close enough. It does have a learning curve, which many people don't want to recognize. In particular, DoF at f/2.8 isn't all that deep, especially at the longer focal lengths.

If you shoot mainly outside go with the 24-105, its extended reach over the 24-70 is one plus, the other is it has IS. A lot of folks leave this unit on the cam 80% of the time.

If you shoot inside then the 24-70 has the plus being 2.8 but is heavy and no IS. see link below

You might want to read this: https://photography-on-the.net …266&highlight=24-105+poll

End of the day, it depends on your shooting style. After owning both, I wouldn't choose one or the other based on image quality, they're both great.

I think the 24-105's main draw on a 5D is convenience. I plan to use mine for travel and daily snapshot type work. When I need something faster, there are the 35L, the 50/1.4 and the 85L within the range.

If you are not using fast primes for situations that call for fast and this lens is more your "do everything" versus your "be convenient" lens then I suspect the 24-70 will be better.
