Once Live View is enabled within the menu system you then have to activate Live View by pressing "Set" and then you deactivate it by pressing "Set" again. Live View should not automatically start when you turn the camera on. Never did, never will - unless the camera is faulty.

Thanks TDODD.

OK Looks like a faulty camera. It certainly has always started live view when I turn on the camera. I thought one only needed to go into the screen to disable it
Only four months old will have to drop it in to Canon when I get back from O/S
Thanks
Denis

Thanks S2000 - for the first time since I've owned my 40D, I finally understand that I CAN autofocus in live view - I've been enjoying the function right now, and autofocussing everything in the room!!
THANKS - as you know, ther are Live View 'instructional' video lessons out there that TELL you to first put your camera into MANUAL focus as an ESSENTIAL to using live view.
bw!

So does Canon's manual. But if you have a lens with full time manual focus (most USM lenses), you don't need to. Even if you do focus manually.

HAHAHAHA!!! I've had my camera for almost two years. Just stumbled on to this site and just found out I can use auto focus in LV mode. Wow... another reason to love my camera!
