What are you using? I am not happy with Mc Affee and am thinking of going with Norton.
BTW: PC with Windows XP
Does anyone have recomendations or suggestions?

Thanks

McAfee and Norton are way too intrusive, and resource-intensive. Have you ever tried uninstalling Norton? In most cases you end up having to totally reformat your hard drive to remove it completely.

I use what most hackers use: :):):)

Firewall: Agnitum OutpostPro Firewall (external link)
Anti-virus: Eset NOD32 (external link)

Both of these products now have "suites" that incorporate both firewall and anti-virus but they are relatively new so I prefer to stick with the software products that are best in their respective classes.

I have been using AVG with very little problems.
If you don't mind spending 20$ you can get the pro version.

avast! antivirus is free for personal use.

www.avast.com (external link)

the convict is right about mcafee. i had to deal with it in a corporate environment, and it installs stuff that simply won't go away. even after an uninstall, the framework system for pushing updates was still there, and RUNNING. it was a complicated process to remove it. on production servers this was unacceptable. reinstalling from a blank hard drive was not an option. norton at least didn't do such silly things, but the footprint on both was huge. we found all this out while switching licenses from mcafee to norton after a corporate buyout.

i'd truely love to find the ultimate minimial footprint antivirus/spyware program. avast is close, but i think something out there is smaller.

My machine came with Norton - yeah, probably a little intrusive behind my back, but I have 2GB of RAM so no memory issues. We get along pretty well - no issues.

Forgot to mention - I've got a router also which acts as a hardware firewall, one of the better forms of protection you can have in addition to a S/W firewall. Thanks for the reminder Kevin :D

don't rely on a router as a firewall. unless you know how to lock down everything in its limited workspace, you will have a false sense of security.

I've used the free version of AVG for quite some time and it appeared to work pretty well for me (you have to google "Free AVG" though as it can be a pain to find on the AVG website (they like to get you to pay for it). The free version is updated on a mostly daily basis, so don't worry about it not being updated regularly.

Having said that, nothing beats some common sense in your internet usage in reducing the chance of nasty things happening.

That's SpyBot - I wouldn't want you to google up and install spyware on your system...
