Anyone have installation problems with Canon software?

I just tried to install the software that came with my 20D in XP (EOS solution disk) and I already had software installed for an S45. After a series of attempts, I now cannot install the 20D software because it thinks it's on my system already, even though it has been uninstalled - very uninstalled. Any one else have problems?

I knew I was in trouble when I updated the S45 software (Zoombrowser, etc.) a few months ago and the installations only partially uninstalled some of the related software. So I was left with having old and new software (and/or) it's folders still in my Start menu (RemoteCapture 2.6 and 2.7) and still present in the Add/Remove programs list - quite a mess.

Attempts to uninstall the older stuff with Add/Remove programs, failed. They still showed up in the list.

So I used the Norton Utilities uninstaller (probably my first mistake) to finally remove the older duplicate apps to get ready for the 20D apps. Then I installed from the 20d CD, plugged in the camera, and while recognized by XP, failed to be accessed via any of the new Canon Utilities.

So I then uninstalled the 20d software with ADD/Remove and all the old S45 apps with Norton. Now when I install the EOS disk, it tells me that it already is installed and I don't need it. Being quite late and feeling desperate, I embarked on registry cleaning with Norton Windows doctor and Systweak's Advanced System Optimizer to strip any reference to Canon or .tmp files that could tip off the installer that it was once ever installed. No dice.

Trying to install the apps individually (aside from the driver) doesn't work either. Sigh.

Norton apps after updates can get corrupted leading to horrific custom uninstallations, but uninstallations usually go smoothly overall - I didn't anticipate this with Canon - and I'm dying to get my pix off my new baby!!

Sometimes I miss my Mac. javascript:emoticon(':wink:')

Not dumb at all!

I fell prey once to the "did you check your connections first?" tip listed at the beginning of any troubleshooting section after too many minutes dinking around in software.

I did a lot of restarts - especially when asked, but I don't recall if I did after each round of uninstalling. That could be a factor although I typically take extra steps. I even tried installing to a new folder to add some path variance. A desperate ploy to be sure.

I have to figure out how to make the installer forget that it was once installed. Maybe I'll try a system restore point. I just don't want to reinstall windows. BTW - I did install SP2 last week.

Hmm...

This doesn`t maybe help but...

Does that Norton Utilities take backups? If it does is it then possible to go back to the moment before you did your first mistakeuninstallion?

I have used freeware EasyCleaner http://www.toniarts.co​m/ (external link) every now and then to clean registry and it takes backups.

I have had a problem with zoombrowser after installing SP2.
The program works fine except that it no longer will "auto-download" from my card reader.

If I connect the camera to the pc, the auto-download works, but not if I use the card reader instead.

The card reader manufacturer says it is not their problem, of course.

For the 1D software, I had to uninstall the twain drivers installed by solution disc by using the uninstall feature in the program folder <all programs, canon utilities, twain driver, uninstall>. Then I needed to go to control panels and remove the camera from the camera and scanners folder. Then I had to download the XP compatible WIA driver.

In your case maybe you need to remove the cameras from the control panel folder and see if you can uninstall from the canon utilities folder.

SUCCESS! :D :D

Thank you for the suggestions, the Norton undo suggestion was my fallback!

As it turns out, I had to find remnants of the installer app itself in the Windows folder and remove them. This tricked the installer into thinking that it hadn't been installed before.

Here're the details....

First, I looked for every miniscule file created at the time of the last install and moved them out of their respective folders. Also, I found while combing log files in Administrative Tools/Event Viewer the name of the app that was doing the installation was "MsiInstaller" and reference to a "MSI.dll" - so I found and moved that too.

After installation of the EOS apps was successful (yay!), I looked among the removed files for ones that were created during the successful installation and moved back ones that weren't.

These were the culprits:

c:/windows/system32/ms​i.dll

C:\WINDOWS\inf\oem20.P​NF

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{D1CA45BE-431A-4FA7-8E98-AFE546F96D58}

SO.

I now have the apps, a very clean registry due to all the utilities and combing and I learned why my System Restore was not working (my fall-fallback). I had swapped out my C drive with a Maxtor awhile ago and used their app to copy the drive. This was dandy except this messed with System Restore. Congrats!! that was a headache you didn't need.

I'll be upgrading ZB soon, either that of the 300D or 20D if I buy it. If I run into trouble, I'll contact you as you are the expert on the subject now.

UPDATE!

Good news. I now have ALL my apps running and playing well together. For a while there, I found that Camera Window was no longer downloading pix from my Canon S45 in Zoombrowser after the EOS apps were installed and I erroneously tried to have Zoombrowser access the 20D. I fortunately created a System Restore Point in XP after I reinstalled the original updated apps for the S45 and verified that they were working.

So, I did a System Restore, uninstalled Camera Window and reinstalled it with the latest Zoombrowser updater from the Canon site. Then I reinstalled the EOS apps, and now, all is well. I am limiting Zoombrowser and related apps to the S45 from now on.

I've since found that my troubles may have stemmed from a bad update in the past and overlapping installlations. I got an i950 printer with Zoombrowser also and apps that "plug-in" to it (Easy Photo Print - not bad in the latest updated version, btw) and I may have created a conflict by installing another Zoombrowser at the time - I had some duplicate folders and uninstalls that didn't "work". So I had issues that finally came back to bite me with the addition of the new driver and apps.

The good news is: you CAN have it all. Just follow the directions TO THE LETTER - restarts, uninstalls, updating, etc.

One thing that was helpful was a tip in one of the readmes - if after installing a new camera and the old camera has problems connecting - Go to Control Panels/System/Device Manager/Imaging Devices and uninstall the bad camera and restart. Then reconnect the bad camera - and all will be well.

I have been trying software for photo management for months - iView, Portfolio, Brilliant, iMatch, etc. but for simple downloading and nice flexibility printing from within the same app (borderless 4x6, etc.) Canon's tools haven't been bad. I am still going to go with iView MediaPro for it's organizing, web output, speed, embedded IPTC keywording and fast nice interface but I'm glad I have the Canon apps for printing for the time being.

Whew.
