I am trying to set my WB to custom with my 30D.

I did the following:

1. took Picture to use as Custom WB
2. Select Menu and scrolled to Custom WB
3. Scrolled through Pictures and hit the select button on appropriate Image

Now my first question is, even though I went through these steps, my Settings on the top of my Camera still shows AWB...does it mean it is still in Auto White balance mode or does the steps I went through, over ride them?

Second question,

I was wanting to set the custom WB...I am in the house and using a hot shoe flash on the camera. I assume I take the picture of the white card using the flash and settings I was going to use in the house because if i take picture of white paper, it just turns out browinsh or off white.

Thanks
JB

You need to change your white balance off "Auto" and to the little flower looking thing. That's the custom WB setting, taking the picture of the gray card/expo disc is only half the equation.

Thanks for the response...I just figured that out...amazing what a little common sense will do :)

What about when I take the image for the Custom WB...Does it matter that I used my hot shoe flash to take the image for the Custom WB?

You'll need to take the custom WB shot with the exact same lighting that the "real" shot will be taken in.

I always take the grey card shot before the "event" begins and if I have time I set the custom WB in camera. Or I do it later in PP w/ Lightroom.
