Wait.. a completely OOF shot?
Yeah... It's bad, eh?
A shot that's not completely in focus and tack-sharp.
The horror of it.

I thought it might do. Kind of in the same way as those 50's French photos you sometimes see. I agree that on photo paper it would look real bad, but going a bit retro with it would probably work out ok.

The bokeh makes the mountains behind the engines look like the sky and clouds. That coupled with the air currents swirling around makes it look very otherworldly, almost like the train framed against a great expanse of the sky, as if you were looking off the edge of the world and saw nothing but sky beyond the train. (even though this perspective is, obviously, physically impossible). If I was manning the 600, this would be "The shot that makes it all worth while" - the purchase price, that is. Thanks, Yoda. I just liked this shot because it's unusual to see a lashup of just locomotives like that. Those 12 units represent something in the vicinity of 50,000 horsepower! The lens is a handful, and there is a certain element of luck whenever I use it. It was extremely windy yesterday, and there was a fair amount of movement of the lens/camera. A number of my shots were blurred due to camera shake even though I was using my big Wimberly rig. I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Normally, I'd reject OOF shots, but I think in some cases, they work ok. Same goes for this one. ![]() This shot is much better. I now understand what you are going for - the 'soft focus' look. However as Al Jacobs famously said, soft focus is not the same as OOF! belmondo wrote in post #4613839 Thanks, Yoda.
