Wait.. a completely OOF shot?

Yeah... It's bad, eh?

A shot that's not completely in focus and tack-sharp.

The horror of it.

Of course. Wouldn't spend canvas on that one unless it was something tremendously, overwhelmingly, personally significant.

I tried that shot on canvas Pete...it comes up with a very period look to it...I think it will work.

I thought it might do. Kind of in the same way as those 50's French photos you sometimes see. I agree that on photo paper it would look real bad, but going a bit retro with it would probably work out ok.

Normally, I'd reject OOF shots, but I think in some cases, they work ok.

Same goes for this one.

Chief.. SUPERB!! I really like that shot. The bokeh makes the mountains behind the engines look like the sky and clouds. That coupled with the air currents swirling around makes it look very otherworldly, almost like the train framed against a great expanse of the sky, as if you were looking off the edge of the world and saw nothing but sky beyond the train. (even though this perspective is, obviously, physically impossible).

If I was manning the 600, this would be "The shot that makes it all worth while" - the purchase price, that is.

Thanks, Yoda. I just liked this shot because it's unusual to see a lashup of just locomotives like that. Those 12 units represent something in the vicinity of 50,000 horsepower! The lens is a handful, and there is a certain element of luck whenever I use it. It was extremely windy yesterday, and there was a fair amount of movement of the lens/camera. A number of my shots were blurred due to camera shake even though I was using my big Wimberly rig.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

This shot is much better. I now understand what you are going for - the 'soft focus' look. However as Al Jacobs famously said, soft focus is not the same as OOF!

That too. I didn't even think you could put 2 of those together since logically (at least to me, who lives in the big city with electric powered trains) you'd only use one per train. It should have occured to me that yes, one engine can pull another engine if needed for maintenance or other operational reasons..

Kick up the contrast a little (I like contrasty shots) and the saturation and it'll look like high contrast slide film.

I can sort of imagine the big 600 acting like a sail in such situations, it is big enough to catch the wind, a problem that few other lenses experience. However the telephoto compression in your photo is pretty awesome and it is precisely what creates the train-almost-in-the-sky look I like.

See, you DO have skill.. it's just that you needed the opportunity and subject :) It's the coming together of the unusual subject, background, opportunity, and you and the gear.
