Ok a few months ago i had posted a question regarding a "large bird" in the general forum. Without a pic it was hard to describe especially since I was trying to explain what i was told from my sisters. Now a week ago my little sister says that the same brid is back. I run outside in the pouring rain and confirm that it is a hawk, but not sure which kind. Anyway with another murder scene in my backyard with blood and feathers everywhere I decided to get my 40d, 70-200 and 2x put together. I paced back and forth in the backyard, constantly going from the front to the back yard non stop. When out of nowhere I hear a bunch of crows gawking and flying eratically. Thats when I saw the wide spread wings of a hawk or something as large just gracefully floating in the stiff breeze. It was an amazing site to be seen here in our neighborhood. Never in the 23 years living here have I ever seen a bird like this. Anyway, i snapped off a few shots of it when it finally landed ontop of a neighbors tree. All the shots were pretty crappy, it was windy and cold, and my fingers were going numb.

But here is the shot of the bird. What kind is it?

And now here are 2 shots I took today in Alpine at the state line lookout. Again was windy and cold and the sun had already started to go down so the bird was beyond backlit. What kind of bird is this?

You have a fine bird, a perigrine falcon to be exact. The photos are not bad either.

Which shot is the falcon? the two birds I cought dont look similar. The second one on the rock i love. I've never seen a bird like it before and have been trying to figure it out on audubon websites, birding sites but have not seen a pic matching it.

Sorry, I can't help with the bird hidden behind the tree. It is definately a bird of prey. Can you provide a 100% crop of that bird?

#2 and 3 are peregrines. Tough call on the first one. Peregrines are a lot of fun to watch fly. Good job on the captures!!!

thanks guys. The bird in the tree was a pita to shoot. The wind was real strong, moving me around and well for a bird on a tree it was no easy task either. A 100% crop is almost unreadable. This was something like 65% i think and was as good as it was going to get.

As for where i cought it. Little Ferry,NJ, USA. Only 100" from my house in a neighbors back yard. Just stood on my steps and fired away. This bird and 2 others have been spotted ALOT lately. I myself nor anyone in my family have ever seen these flying around. I'll definitely have the camera ready to snap off more shots. I had thought it might be a coopers hawk, but not to sure.

Sorry I cant help you with the ID of the first bird, but the first peregrine falcon shot is great....the rock face, tree, BG colours and the bird isolated out from the tree all make for an excellent shot.

If there are feeders out in your neighbourhood, you can be pretty sure the hawk may winter there as well, so hopefully you can get some more shots of him too.

i've been throwing out stale bread in the yard to see if maybe I can attract some pigeons. Not trying to condon anything like purposefull killing or anything, but more less as bait to see if I can get the bird in the area and then if he comes to the yard i'de get my shots and scare him away. Only place i can think of him/her staying is the old slave cemetary just up the block or the other cemetary 3 blocks away. There are a abnormal amount of nests to this year in the trees.
