Ok I read around the stickys and FAQs but seem to have got stuck

I have a 40D, CS2, and using Vista.

I have never bothered using RAW before and thought in efforts to become better I would practice.

The problem is I can not view RAW files.

I have downloaded all the latest patches for adobe. When I try to open the RAW it gives me the "file not supported".

So... i either need another program (free) to convert RAW to be usable on CS2 or i need to figure out how to use it in photoshop.

What is DPP? i brought the CD that came with my 40D to work so i could mess around on my laptop to kill time. it brings me to the canon site. I cant find what to download. There is 1 more CD I forgot and left at work :(

Is there a way to download the DPP for 40D?

I also tryed the DNG adobe converter. But after i use it i get an error saying didnt proccess the pictures succecfully.

So any help would be great

Thanks

Also the 40D has Ver 1.0.4 installed. Would i need to upgrade to 1.0.5? and if so what is the easiest way of doing this.

Just stop messing with RAW :) Its a PITA.

That being said, AFAIK CS2 doesnt support the RAW files from the 40D. I think you need CS3 for that.

There are some other RAW programs like Capture One (or something like that) that may work.

Carlson,

To view your raw files, all you need to do is install one program to your liking.

For PS CS2, I think that the 40D raw is readable...though I cannont recall since I am not at my computer to make sure. Here is the latest version of Camera Raw for CS2 --> LINKY (external link)

I actually use DPP for reading my raw files and converting. DPP aka Digital Photo Professional is a great free program. If you have the install disk, then install it to your computer. Otherwise, here is the link to the 40D download page --> LINKY (external link)

Just choose your OS from the drop down box right under the grey bar that says 'Downloads'...then click the DDP link. You do however, have to have one of the 4 other programs installed that are described in the instructions.

Rubbish. Download and install the latest Camera RAW Plugin from the Adobe Website and follow the instructions to install it.

DPP is on your Canon CD. Adobe Camera RAW is better though.

Make sure you follow the installation instructions for the plugin to the letter, and you will be right.

CS2 will NOT work with 40D raw. You will need CS3 or DPP. DPP comes free with your 40D and works very good.

Photoshop CS2 comes with version 3 of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). This version of ACR, which numbered from 3.0 to 3.7, does not support RAW files created by Canon 40D cameras. To read 40D RAW files in ACR, you will need version 4 which only runs under Photoshop CS3.

One option would be to download the free Adobe DNG converter which will convert your RAW files to DNG format and allow them to be read in Photoshop CS2. http://www.adobe.com …ads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3820 (external link)

Another option would be to install the software that came with your camera; DPP is Canon RAW conversion software and will read your files without problems.

If you do go the Adobe Camera RAW route, see if you can lay your hands on the "Real World Camera Raw For Adobe photoshop CS3" book by Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe. Helps you really get the best out of ACR.

All the best.

Regarding firmware 1.0.4: There is a bug in the firmware that prevented PSCS3/ACR and Lightroom from opening the RAWs, although DPP was ok with it. Vs. 1.0.5 was released to repair that and at the same time PSCS3/ACR and LR also released new versions that addressed the problem
